Friday brought two developments which should force Celtic’s hierarchy to do considerably more than simply release a statement.
Firstly, Celtic have been ordered to play their next home Scottish Cup tie behind closed doors, with the club also required to pay £100,000 to their opponents in compensation for lost gate revenue.
Hours later came another blow.
Rangers confirmed Celtic will receive only 300 tickets for the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final at Ibrox on September 13, citing this Blackbourne Report that I have never bothered to read, events following March’s Scottish Cup meeting and their assessment of the current safety risk.
So what are Celtic going to do about it?
Credit where it’s due, the club have already responded strongly to the Scottish FA punishment, describing it as “disproportionate”.
Celtic also made an important distinction.
March’s incident happened at Ibrox. Celtic weren’t the home club responsible for stadium safety and, while nobody should defend supporters entering the field of play, it was minimal and reacting in a celebratory fashion.
The club clearly believes the circumstances and differing behaviours weren’t properly reflected in the punishment.
Their statement finished by saying Celtic would study the panel’s reasoning before considering “our next steps.”
Good.
Now supporters need to see what those next steps actually are.
Because Rangers subsequently reducing Celtic’s allocation from the thousands we’ve recently seen inside Ibrox to just 300 has created another issue requiring leadership.
According to their statement, Rangers believe a smaller allocation provides greater accountability, stronger entry controls and improved segregation.
Try having the necessary levels of security in the first place lads eh.
They also claim Celtic’s response to proposals following the cup draw didn’t sufficiently address their concerns.
Celtic must respond to that.
Not with playground point-scoring between two clubs, but by clearly explaining to supporters whether Rangers’ version of events is accurate and what Celtic intend to do about an away allocation which has effectively returned us to the dark days of barely any visiting support at these fixtures.
More importantly, our board must defend ordinary Celtic supporters.
Thousands who had absolutely nothing to do with events in March could now lose the opportunity to attend our next home Scottish Cup tie.
Thousands more have effectively been locked out of Ibrox.
Fans who behave impeccably every week are the ones paying the price.
Celtic have already said they are shocked by the Scottish FA’s decision.
Fine.
Challenge it if you believe it’s wrong.
Seek clarity over the 300-ticket allocation.
Engage with Rangers, the authorities and whoever else is required to find a solution that protects safety without effectively removing supporters from Scottish football’s biggest fixtures.
Celtic’s statement was a start.
Now Michael Nicholson and those around him need to show supporters what they’re actually prepared to do next.
Because saying a decision is disproportionate means very little if you simply accept it anyway.
If ever there was a time, they could be doing with to come out backing our fans, its now.

Out of the champions league, and big distraction is ticket allocation for the ragers game , I don’t give a shit about the ragers game , but for Desmond and his malignant cabal of corporate greed and austerity fc to get off scott free ,we are being played . No fan should apply for a ticket as for having to pay the other club gate money the board can’t moan about that chicken feed as they have cost the club millions in UCL money, as for Mon he is just one of them could not care about the fans needs a wage to pay his debts.
I cant see anything worth while coming from the board,,as it’ll interfere with their o**f*** brand,,the amount of players b/room staff that have been attacked in some form in in recent past,,nothing said or done by the club,,cant see this being any different,,,

Just do what I’m led to believe they do in games between Boca Juniors and River Plate and make Glasgow derbies home fans only. How games at Hampden would be dealt with I don’t know.
