McGregor on why he thought his Celtic career was over

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has admitted that he thought his career with Celtic was over when he was arrested for drunk driving in February.

The 22-year-old has been banned from driving for a year after he was found to be almost four times over the limit and he was subsequently dropped from the Celtic side by manager Ronny Deila.

McGregor was frozen out of the side for four games abut has bounced back with goals in two consecutive games and two credible performances against Morton and Partick Thistle.

As quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, McGregor admitted that he felt really down after the offence and he thought that he’d never play for the Scottish champions again.

He said:

I had some dark days after it, I was so disappointed in myself. It was a hard thing to take and I needed to try and get my head around it. It was an awful time. But while I thought that might be it for me in terms of my Celtic career, the manager came and out an arm around me and told me that I had to have a think and then try to lift myself.

McGregor also revealed that in his conversation with the manager, he was told to learn from his mistakes and make sure that he redeems himself when the opportunity to do so arises.

He told me it was stupid but that the most important thing I take out of it is a lesson. I am so grateful that I have been handed another chance and I am desperate to take it.

I feel as though I have been handed a second chance and I want to make the most of it.

The midfielder will hope to continue his good performances in the season run-in and help Celtic to second consecutive league and cup double.
