Noel Whelan has questioned whether Christian Atsu would’ve been a good signing for Celtic.

The Hoops made contact with Newcastle United over a move for Atsu on Friday before the winger decided to turn down a move.

And speaking to Football Insider, Whelan questioned whether the 28-year-old would’ve had the character required to fit in and succeed at Celtic, suggesting the Hoops are better off using their current options.

I think you’ve got to be careful with certain players, their attitude, the way they are around the place.

You don’t want to bring players in if they’re not going to blend well. We know all about Atsu, very quick, tricky, but like Charlie Nicholas said, he’s correct, I don’t think he would have got in the side.

Do you really want somebody who’s moved from a Premier League club, ousted there, to be sitting on the bench? It could spell disaster if he’s not got the right character.

I can’t comment on his character too much, but I think sometimes it’s very dangerous, and I think sometimes you’re better off using what you’ve got at the club until the end of the season when you can really get in the player that you do want.

I can’t say I was overly disappointed when a move for Atsu failed to materialise in the end.

Are you pleased Celtic didn't sign Christian Atsu?

Yes

No

This is a winger who has created just nine assists and eight goals in 118 Newcastle appearances in all competitions, and I feel as though he would’ve fallen into the category of panic signing had the Hoops completed a move.

While I feel it could have been smart business to bring a winger in last month, given Mikey Johnston’s long-term injury and Mohamed Elyounoussi’s fitness struggles, I’m not sure Atsu is the type of player Celtic should have been targeting.
