Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds has compared Celtic’s win over St Johnstone last weekend to the League Cup final victory over the Gers back in December, and he is spot on with his point.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound (01/02/2020, 4:58), Dodds suggested Celtic were tested against Saints at McDiarmid Park but ultimately the Hoops found a way to win as they seem to do so often.
This game had everything, this game was open, it had energy, intensity, pressure and there was even desperation thrown in there at times.
But then Celtic do what they do, they find a way. Sometimes I don’t know how they do it, but they get there. They get the free-kick, and it needed that one moment of quality from Christie.
The Champions just keep on finding a way to somehow win a game. They won that cup final, don’t know how they did. Today St Johnstone probably deserved a replay, but Celtic won it. They just know how to win games and that’s why they’re champions.

While the Saints did play well and gave Celtic a real test on Sunday, in what was an old fashioned cup tie due to the weather and the pitch, ultimately the Hoops took one of their chances and deserved to go through.
Therefore, Neil Lennon’s men deserve credit for having that mentality and ability to be able to come through scrappy games and take the win.
And that is exactly what Dodds is praising here, as he is emphasising how Celtic always seem to be able to find a way of winning domestically despite not producing their best football.
Furthermore, as one of the old cliche’s in football goes, that is the mark of champions, as Dodds suggests.
