Opinion: Multiple trophy winner likely has no future at Celtic

It seems that a Celtic striker could be returning to the club. The Scottish Sun is reporting that Dundee are considering ending Leigh Griffiths’ loan deal early and as a result, the player would return to Celtic Park.

Griffiths has featured for the Dens Park club 14 times this season, but has scored just two goals. You have to think that Dundee thought that Griffiths would have scored more goals in his time at the club, but it is not to be.

Should Griffiths return to Celtic, you have to imagine that he has no future at the club, even though the Hoops have had a lot of injury problems up front this season.

You would think that with the strikers that Celtic have at the club, and with Griffiths’ poor record this season, that he has little to no chance of featuring for the Bhoys this season.

Indeed, with the off-field issues that have involved the player over the last few years, it is probably safe to say that he has no future at the club. It would not be a surprise to see Celtic and Griffiths try to come to an agreement and end his Celtic contract early should he leave Dundee.

That would be a sensible move, as it would let Griffiths be a free agent, and there will be clubs in Scotland that are interested in signing the player, despite his poor return for the Dens Park club.

Griffiths was at one stage one of Celtic’s most important players, even pre the covid pandemic, when he and Odsonne Edouard formed a good strike partnership, but those days seems like a long time ago.

Griffiths’ time at Celtic does have to be considered a success on the pitch, as he scored 123 goals in 262 appearances.

He also won multiple trophies with the Hoops, 14 in total including seven league titles, and was named as Scotland’s player of the year in 2016. As he is 31-years-old, Griffiths could still have a few years of football left in him, but that surely isn’t going to be with Celtic.

You would think though, that teams in the Scottish Championship, if they are looking to win promotion, would be keen on signing Griffiths, as he could find the back of the net on a regular basis at that level of the game.
