Whilst the Scottish Premiership title race has started to really hot up in recent weeks, Celtic’s form continues to be pretty impressive in reality, but that is not to say there are not issues that fans have, or improvements that manager Brendan Rodgers would like to more quickly see.
We will all soon see what the second half of the 2023/24 campaign brings as the season will very quickly draw to a close, but for now we have to keep our focus on maintaining our current form, hoping injuries do not hit and pushing as hard as we can to get our previous points advantage back and if you like a small flutter on your football. One player who will certainly help on that front is on loan Norwich City attacker, Adam Idah, as having joined us at the end of the January transfer window for the remainder of the campaign, the 23 year old Republic of Ireland international was performing very well for his parent club following his breakthrough in the 2019/20 campaign, and he has picked up where he left off on his arrival at Parkhead.
Having scored a hattrick in just his third appearance for Norwich, he has gone on to score 17 times in 39 starts for them, and with just three appearances to his name for us so far, his brace against Hibernian earlier this month should hopefully just be a sign of things to come.
At the very least it means he has settled well, and although his two Hibs goals were from the penalty spot, this early into his time with us it means his confidence remains high and many fans would assume in demanding to take the efforts from the spot, it speaks to his determination to do well and be a success with us.
Speaking for himself more recently, Idah is clearly loving his time at the club, and he made a big point about specifically mentioning the welcome and support he had been given by the fans since his arrival.
Talking to the Official Celtic FC Podcast, even though he has not really been with us that long, he explained.
“The times I’ve been out the fans have been great. And I’ve said in other interviews where just like on social media every single message I’ve got has been unbelievable. To be fair to all the fans, they’ve been great with me. I just want to play at Celtic Park in front of them.”
It is quite a good turnaround in some ways for the player, as there was a degree of an underwhelmed reception for him upon initially making the move, but it was not personal in judgement on his quality, it was more an apathy that had built up surrounded how the fans viewed the clubs’ over all transfer policy and our business to date.
This, of course, stemmed from all the interviews the gaffer made where he spoke almost exclusively of nothing more than adding quality additions to the squad during the winter window, as he clearly had improvements on his mind. As we know, this did not come to pass with only two players eventually coming in (Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna) through the doors, and if we look further at basic transfer incomings and outgoings, for the entire season – if media reported valuations can be relied on – we have very easily made a 50% profit as an absolute minimum on a net basis.
With Idah’s impact so far, and him quickly becoming a little bit of a fan favourite despite the minimal lack of games right now, it is a safe bet he will only further warm himself to the hearts of fans in the coming weeks and months.
If his experience remains the same – knowing we clearly have wriggle room for the summer budget – he could very well prove to be a shrewd bit of business by Rodgers, and he will undoubtedly have a big say on whether, or not, his deal does turn into a permanent one, as right now he is beginning to look like a player we would not want to lose over the summer.
Let us hope we do not if he progresses as we all hope.
