Scottish football has its own magic, the finest players can grace Celtic Park for some time while being ignored by the wider football sphere focusing on the big five European leagues. International football windows provide a chance for some of the Scottish Premier League’s finest to prove themselves beyond their league and prove the quality that they possess, and that the Bhoys host in their squad.
This summer, the runaway success has been Alistair Johnston who has represented one of the host nations and his club to a high level. While Canada may no longer be available to play on Winbox, they are worth discussing as one of the stories of the summer.
He didn’t make his debut for the national team until a little later in his career as he was 21 before breaking into the picture, but he has since racked up 63 caps across all competitions and is one of the first names on the sheet under Jessy Marsch in this stronger era of Canadian football.
Canadian Standout
As the least talked about of the three World Cup hosts, the Canadian national team went out there with something to prove over the summer of 2026 and they did so successfully. Despite falling at the Round of 16, they will be proud of their efforts to go into the knockout stages having been overlooked for the entire tournament. They got to show that their tactical stylings and unity are better than their status.
One of the standout performers of the tournament for them was full back Johnston who showed an ability on both sides of the ball, an engine, and a tactical understanding that was key to his team’s success in the competition.Totalling 720 minutes across the tournament, he was an ironman for the country during their successful campaign on home soil.
Proven Domestic Quality
As mentioned before, Celtic fans already knew of the quality their starting right back possessed and have watched on as the global audience caught on. While the World Cup can still be watched from Winbox Live, there will be some focus from eliminated players and nations on their return to club football, and that will be a big one for Johnston.
Since making his move to Celtic Park under Ange Postecoglou, the Canadian has made 122 appearances for the Scottish champions, contributing 24 assists from the full back spot and popping up with six goals during a very fruitful time at the club.
The biggest sign of a players quality is often seen when they’re absent, this can be the case for the 27-year-old. He missed almost the entirety of the past campaign for his club as he made just 11 appearances across all competitions. This coincided with the Hoops having one of their worst seasons in year, they struggled to defend their league title, needing a last day win to pip Hearts of Midlothian to the title after sacking two managers and calling on Martin O’Neill to right the ship. There’s no guarantee that Jonston would have salvaged things, but it is clear that they missed their starting right-back, requiring a mid-season loan for Julian Araujo to help them right the ship.
There will no doubt be talks of a departure after a breakout World Cup campaign, particularly as the team appears to be undergoing a possible overhaul of the squad. Johnston may be one name that the side have to keep, his comeback made the difference late on in their bid to retain their league title and he could do so again as the competitors get ready to push Celtic to the limit again.
