The more I look at Niko Sigur, the more this potential Celtic signing just makes sense.
Reports now suggest Toulouse have had a €2million bid rejected by Hajduk Split, with Celtic still very much in the picture for the Canadian international. Sigur can play both right-back and in midfield, and that versatility suddenly looks even more important for Martin O’Neill.
Because the Alistair Johnston situation has changed.
We initially thought Celtic might be without him for a number of weeks. There are now reports suggesting his absence could stretch as far as November.
That is a massive chunk of football.
Now, I need to give Colby Donovan his flowers here.
I thought the young man was excellent against LASK on Wednesday night. That was the biggest game of Celtic’s season, a Champions League qualifier under the lights at Paradise, and Donovan didn’t look remotely fazed by the occasion.
But here’s the important bit.
Donovan playing well isn’t an argument against signing Sigur.
It’s actually an argument for building proper competition.
Celtic have too often found themselves in situations where an injury happens and suddenly you’re looking at the bench wondering who can possibly come in without dramatically weakening the team.
Why should we accept that?
Go and sign Sigur.
If Donovan continues playing brilliantly and keeps a new signing out of the team, absolutely fantastic.
That’s football.
Imagine Celtic spending several million pounds on Sigur, bringing in a Canadian international with more than 100 senior appearances for Hajduk, and Donovan turns around and says: you’re not getting my jersey.
I’d love that.
That’s what competition breeds.
And if Donovan’s form dips, he’s injured, suspended or simply needs rested, Celtic suddenly have another proper option ready to step in rather than scrambling around trying to fill a hole. Sigur’s ability to move into midfield gives O’Neill another solution elsewhere too, which is so helpful.
Jackie McNamara is a fine example of someone who could fill both those positions and played a huge number of games for Celtic each season under Martin O’Neill.
That’s how squads competing domestically and in Europe are supposed to operate.
Johnston remains Celtic’s established right-back when fit. Donovan has just shown us that there could be a genuine first-team player emerging underneath him.
Adding Sigur doesn’t block that.
It raises the standard again.
With Toulouse reportedly already making their move, Celtic know there is competition for his signature and roughly what sort of money Hajduk are looking for.
If Celtic genuinely believe Niko Sigur improves this squad, don’t hang about.
Bring him in and let them fight for the jersey.
Celtic will be better for it.
If there’s only one player that could be signed I would sign sigur . Middle of the park is where we really need help and he looks a very good player and for a couple of mill it’s a no brainer surely
