Celtic have been handed a potentially massive double boost ahead of an absolutely crucial run of fixtures, with Kieran Tierney and Kasper Høgh both back in training.
Sky Sports Scotland footage from Lennoxtown this morning showed both players taking part as Martin O’Neill’s side prepare for Wednesday night’s trip to St Johnstone.
Alistair Johnston was also back out on the grass as he continues his recovery, although his return is expected to take longer.
The timing could hardly be better!
Tierney and Høgh both missed Saturday night’s 2-1 victory over St Mirren, having also been unavailable against Aberdeen. Celtic managed to win both games without them, but the next 12 days represent a completely different challenge.
After St Johnstone comes Rangers at Ibrox in the League Cup quarter-final, Ferencváros at Celtic Park in the Europa League and then another meeting with Rangers at Celtic Park.
Those are precisely the matches where you want your big players available.
Tierney’s importance needs little explanation. He’s Celtic’s first-choice left-back, offers genuine quality going forward and brings experience of exactly the type of high-pressure fixtures Celtic are about to encounter.
Høgh could be every bit as important.
Camilo Durán has performed brilliantly in his absence, but Høgh gives Martin something completely different.
He’s a physical presence through the middle and that could be particularly valuable during the battles Celtic are about to face — not least two meetings with Rangers.
Having both available also gives O’Neill something he’s been desperately short of recently – genuine first-team options rather than simply finding solutions to injuries.
Experience and physicality in the first team too.
Training obviously doesn’t guarantee either starts against St Johnstone tomorrow night, and Celtic will surely be sensible after their recent absences.
But with four massive games arriving in just 12 days, seeing both Kieran Tierney and Kasper Høgh back at Lennoxtown is seriously good news.
Celtic’s next fortnight could shape the early direction of their season.
Getting two first-team players back just as it begins could be huge for what should be a crucial next few weeks.
