There was something different in the air at Celtic Park on Thursday night in the midst of our pathetic surrender to Ferencvaros.
Underneath what seemed to be an apathetic atmosphere, there was a bubbling, seething anger beginning to take form.
By the 80th minute, people had had enough of what they were witnessing.
Fans left in their droves as they had no faith whatsoever in anything other than a demoralising defeat being the final outcome.
The utter lack of urgency and constant passing back of the ball was too much for some people to bear.
There now seems to be a paralysing fear of going beyond the half way line and venturing into the opposition box.
Maybe this is down to the fact that all trust is gone in our midfield set up.
Or maybe it’s because the fear of losing the ball will result in an inevitable precision attacking move and the possible concession of a goal.
Either way, nothing is working.
And when you’ve hit the point where nothing is working, you’re in serious trouble.
Because when you’re at that point, where all ideas are gone stale, and nobody can see a way forward for the team, there’s only one thing that will solve that problem…
Fresh ideas.
Right now, we have nobody capable of fresh and forward thinking at Celtic.
If you were to look up the actual definition of stuck in a rut, which is to be trapped in a dull, repetitive routine or lifestyle, you could simply replace it with the word ‘Celtic’.
Celtic now epitomises that expression
The only way this nightmare we’re stumbling headlong into ends, is when the Axis of Feeble is gone.
I will not take any credit for the perfect moniker recently given to the Celtic board, all of the credit for that belongs to John Hughes.
If you want to see John’s excellent blogs, just hit the link here for his website.
At times, John’s assessments of Celtic’s board are teetering somewhere between downright hilarious, and downright depressing.
Both descriptions always deliver the same message in the end, though.
The Celtic board is feeble, pathetic, and entirely unfit for purpose.
Thursday night was the perfect example of where we’re at right now, and also of where we’re headed.
What’s happening at Celtic at the moment is the result of continuous downsizing
You see, continuous downsizing will eventually close in on itself.
Effectively, it will eat itself, and then spit itself out.
Over the last few seasons, the life span of a decent Celtic player – or asset – from the board’s point of view, has reduced from 3 years to 2 years or less now.
Take Nicolas Kuhn, in isolation for example, he was only at Celtic for 18 months before we cashed in on him.
Prior to that, Matt O’Riley was at the club for 2 and a half years before he was cashed in on.
Jota only lasted 2 years as well before his money spinning move to Saudi Arabia.
A year in reality, if you consider he was on loan for his first season.
Since Michael Nicholson became CEO, this has been the pattern with player sales.
If Camilo Duran picks up form again, he could be the first Celtic player to be sold for big money after just one season.
This is why Celtic can never have a long-term outlook.
The board continuously asset strips any quality from our squad
But now the time span for asset stripping has become narrower and narrower.
This is why we find ourselves in the current predicament we’re in.
The asset stripping is starting to consume itself because over the last couple of seasons, the board has decided that certain assets do not need replacing.
The last two transfer windows have shown the tendency to use sticking plasters in the form of increasing loan signings.
There have been 9 alone over the course of these windows.
The board considers this a tried and tested method, but this season is now showing the pitfalls of it because it is failing badly.
Prime assets are also starting to become few and far between over the last two seasons.
Take a look at the current squad, and how many do you have?
Alistair Johnston, Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran?
Who else?
Mika Baur and Joel van den Berg (if we ever get to see what he can do) may gather value as assets in the coming months.
But outside of that right now, there is not much else
Unless Kasper Høgh finds form again, he is starting to devalue already.
Haissem Hassan also needs to show what he can do, as we’re only seeing it in flashes at the moment.
A big part of that, though, is probably down to the fact that our current formation is failing.
But that’s a story for another article, and something I have covered extensively anayway.
What we’re really seeing now is the result of continuous downsizing and asset stripping.
And it is finally catching up on us.
By tomorrow afternoon, we might be concluding that it has reached it’s nadir and caught us.
Losing to the Ibrox side tomorrow might not be rock bottom, but I think it could be the catalyst to sending us there
When you’re at the point where you’re clinging to the hope that results ahead might get better, while the ones preceding them just get poorer and poorer, you know where the season is headed.
We are now clinging to the hope that tomorrow will yield a positive result.
While deep down most of us have genuinely lost the belief that we can get one.
This is how I felt during the Covid season.
I clung to the hope that things might change, but they never did, so eventually I gave up hope and accepted what was meant to be.
I feel like this season is headed in that direction.
But what enrages me about this entire situation is the fact that all of this is down to the Axis of Feeble.
As with everything that goes wrong at Celtic, it is entirely self-inflicted.
I can’t say we are the architects of our own downfall, because we are not, they are
No Celtic fan wants this.
And any happy clapper that says they do is delusional.
They have always clung to domestic bliss, but what will they cling to if that goes?
The amazing balance in the bank?
Or the belief that one poor season is just a blip, the same way they’ve been saying last Sunday was a blip, along with LASK and Ferencvaros.
A bad day at the office, they said.
The office has been torched at this stage.
Celtic failing in any season is unacceptable, utterly unacceptable.
A club with the size of the resources ours has should not be accepting failure on any level.
Failing this season could be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
This board have pushed and pushed continuously to see what they can get away with, but there eventually comes a point where you can’t get away with it any more.
If we lose tomorrow, it could spell the beginning of the end for the Axis of Feeble
They had two shields remaining to hide behind, Martin O’Neill and domestic bliss.
Unless he can get a result tomorrow, the unfortunate reality is that Martin O’Neill may well be a busted flush now.
And if he is a busted flush, then so too is domestic bliss.
Lose that, and this board has no where to hide.
Celtic fans will accept a lot, but they will not accept failure on the home front.
The Covid season we accepted as an anomaly because of freakish circumstances.
In reality, most of us know the failures of that season were down to board failures, but we gave them a free pass on that one because of Covid.
Covid can’t protect them now.
Conceding our title and possibly the Scottish Cup this season with the amount of money we have in the bank will be nothing short of criminal.
Nobody should survive a capitulation like that.
Nobody.
But they will cling on desperately for dear life regardless of what happens.
They will put a scorched earth policy before the betterment of Celtic Football Club.
Believe me when I say this, if we lose tomorrow, and this season goes south thereafter, we are going to enter into one hell of a battle to try and remove these charlatans from our club.
If that happens, they cannot be permitted to remain custodians of this amazing football club.
They can no longer be allowed to dismantle it brick by brick.
Because that’s what they’ve been doing for years now, while lining their own pockets.
They have been destroying this club and it’s once imperious reputation for long enough.
We are now the laughing stock of Europe, and soon to possibly be the laughing stock of Scotland.
It has to end.
Tomorrow is bigger than you think.
There is much more than just 3 points riding on it.
Our very future could be riding on it…

As my all time musical hero said circa 1976 …’ it’s the beginning of the beginning of the end of the beginning ! ‘ The Last Waltz ….very appropriate !
Excellent read Eric, I cannot see any way we can prevent the newco physically running over our midfield tomorrow, but, I live in hope. Hope this is the start of the end of our board, otherwise apathy in the stands will significantly harm the club.
One question? Who is going to remove them.
Frankie, everybody acts like this is impossible. Nothing is impossible, and if this season continues to unravel, the anger is going to be off the scale. Life will become so uncomfortable for them, it will eventually take its toll. You can’t continue to destroy Celtic the way they have been, and expect nothing to happen.
Sorry,I disagree,Eric. As you already said, they will destroy our club(as if they aren’t doing so already) before they will give up their gold plated perks and salaries.
The Celtic Collective sit on their hands as each and every calamatous result lands with not a word.
Are they even still in existence, you have to ask ?
They could have called for a ONE GAME boycott of the Sevco match to send a message tomorrow for the sky cameras to explain the sparse numbers in attendance.
However, it’s radio silence when the fanbase are ripe for rebellion.
Alas,I fear we are headed for the footballing version of the apocalypse because these bastards will handcuff themselves to the table legs in the boardroom,if they feel the need.
Most Celtic fans I talked to had no real hope to win the ferencvaros game but they thought we needed to show something going into this game on Sunday . I don’t think I’ve wanted to win this game more than any other in recent memory. I went into ferencvaros game thinking Martin would be hurt and he would somehow do something tactically but it didn’t turn out that way. We need confidence so I think first Mon has to make us hard to score against , even if it is hard to watch and hopefully snatch one or two.
Their lack of investment over the past 20 years has maybe caused a loss of around 30 million quid ….
They are arrogant, incompetent imbeciles who think that it’s their club…. unpleasant and stupid people
