We’re on a top, unbeaten run and all. But the numbers beneath the results tell us something the table is hiding.
So, on the surface, everything looks grand.
We’re top of the league. Eighteen points on the board. Until today, we hadn’t lost a game.
But scratch beneath that, and something doesn’t add up.
Because no team in Scotland creates more than we do, and yet the goals aren’t landing the way they should.
Seventeen-point-four expected goals from seven league games. That’s the highest in the division, by a distance.
Fourteen actual goals to show for it.
That’s a gap of minus three-point-four.
No One in Scotland Creates More Than Us, That’s Not the Problem
Let’s be fair about what’s going right first.
We’re generating 2.49 xG a game. Nobody else in the Premiership is close.
And at the other end, we’ve got the meanest defence in the league – four goals conceded in seven, an expected goals against of just 7.26.
So this isn’t one of those “we’re a shambles” pieces.
The platform is elite. The chances are there, week in, week out.
But…
Here’s the uncomfortable bit.
Fourteen goals from 17.43 xG means we’re leaving roughly three-and-a-half goals’ worth of chances out on the pitch across seven games.
That’s not a small rounding error. That’s a pattern.
And do you know the only side in the whole division wasting more? The Ibrox side. Eight goals from sixteen xG, a minus 8. That’s frankly comical.
When Sevco are the only club in Scotland finishing worse than us, that’s not the company we want to be keeping.
To be clear about where the fault lies: this is the forwards, not the men creating the chances.
The League Table Is Flattering Us
Then there’s the points.
Eighteen on the board, but our expected points sit at 14.53. We’re overperforming that by three-and-a-half.
In plain terms: we’re winning tighter games than the underlying numbers say we’ve earned.
And we’re doing it on the back of that defence.
Saturday revealed it bare.
Biggest game of the season, at home, and we mustered just 0.69 xG. We lost 1-0.
The one week the back line had an off day, there was no clinical front line to dig us out because we haven’t built one.
This is exactly what this board has left us with – a team that dominates the ball, batters out chances, and then trusts the goalkeeper and back four to win it 1-0.
That works until it doesn’t.
What the Numbers Mean If You’re Backing Us
Right, so where does all this leave a punter?
The obvious market is the boring one. We’re short-priced favourites most weeks, and “back Celtic to win” gives you next to no value at those odds.
Where the underlying numbers actually point to the other end of the pitch.
That league-best defence (four conceded, 7.26 xGA) gives a real basis for thinking about clean-sheet and win-to-nil markets, especially against the bottom half.
And because we batter out so many chances (that 2.49 xG a game), the shots and corners markets stay interesting even on the days the finishing runs cold.
The trap? Piling into team-goals overs purely because the xG is enormous.
That minus 3.4 is the warning: the finishing hasn’t matched the chances yet, so those big-goal bets are riskier than the raw xG makes them look.
Now, the underperformance suggests the goals should start arriving eventually. That’s how regression tends to work.
But “should” is not “will”. Anyone telling you a bet is nailed on is trying to get you in.
Do Your Homework Before You Back Anyone
Here’s the honest bit of advice.
If you’re going to bet on us, or anywhere, do your research first.
That means knowing your markets, but it also means knowing who it is that you’re actually handing your money to. Which brands are fair, which are under the same licence, which sister site is just the same operator with a different logo.
AlterPlay’s sister sites guide is a solid place to start for that. It’s a research and comparison site. It digs into operators and their sister brands so you can compare, rather than signing up blind.
Do the reading. Then decide.
Bets should be for fun, not as a way to make money or chase losses. If gambling is affecting you or someone you know, there is free, confidential support and safer-play tools available at responsible gambling support, or call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.
This Is a Warning, Not a Crisis
That’s not to say the sky is falling in.
Regression is two-edged. The wins look more fragile than the league table suggests, but the chances are good enough that even average finishing would be putting games to bed early.
So here’s the question I’ll leave you with.
Do we finally sharpen the finishing?
Or do we keep crossing our fingers that the defence bails us out every single week?
We know what this board would rather pay for, bhoys. Let’s just hope the manager gets a say.
