Celtic won the Scottish Premiership on the pitch. Yet months later, sections of Scottish football still seem determined to rewrite the story as some great injustice against Hearts.
The latest contribution comes from Hearts goalkeeper Beau Reus, who wasn’t even at the club when Celtic secured the title.
Apparently, that hasn’t stopped the grievance being passed around the Tynecastle dressing room.
Hearts Collapsed – Celtic Didn’t Cheat
Reus claims his teammates still believe they were “screwed over” last season.
He even admitted: “I can’t say anything about that with 100% certainty, because I wasn’t there.”
That admission should end the argument.
Instead, we have another round of insinuations about a championship Celtic won through football, not some imaginary conspiracy.
Hearts went to Celtic Park knowing what was required. They led 1-0, surrendered that advantage and lost 3-1.
That is not robbery. That is a football team failing to finish the job when the pressure was greatest.
Celtic delivered. Hearts didn’t.
McInnes Couldn’t Accept the Outcome
Derek McInnes helped fuel the hysteria following Celtic’s late penalty against Motherwell.
The award for handball provoked an extraordinary reaction, with McInnes describing the decision as “disgusting”.
A disputed refereeing decision can be debated. It does not automatically become evidence of cheating.
Yet the reaction suggested something far more sinister had occurred.
McInnes was entitled to question the decision. He was not entitled to expect everyone else to accept that Celtic’s championship was somehow illegitimate.
Scottish Media Keep Feeding the Grievance
And this is where sections of the Scottish mainstream media deserve serious criticism.
Rather than challenge the insinuations, they continue giving oxygen to a narrative that portrays Celtic’s title victory as suspicious.
Where is the evidence of wrongdoing?
Where is the proof Celtic cheated?
There is none presented in these latest remarks.
Yet the grievance survives because controversy generates headlines, particularly when Celtic are involved.
Celtic Deserve Credit, Not Conspiracy Theories
After more than five decades watching Scottish football, I struggle to recall such an extraordinary reaction to Celtic winning a championship.
Hearts had their opportunity. They were ahead in the decisive match. They lost.
The responsibility for that failure belongs on the pitch, not in some endless campaign of grievance.
Reus wasn’t there, admits he cannot verify what happened, yet still repeats the accusation.
And sections of the media are happy to keep the story alive.
Celtic won the league. Hearts lost it. No amount of complaining will change that.
You could be forgiven if thinking that there was some sort of memo or email or implied ‘nod and a wink ‘sent out to all clubs from the governing bodies saying ‘ Celtic FC is not to win the league title ‘ or similar because winning constantly is not great for the league in wee Scotland ( give others a chance ) , and so everyone is still so totally pissed off that it happened …5 months after the fact ? Everything and everyone bar Celtic all singing from the same hymn sheet knowing that Hearts just had to turn up to Celtic Park on the last day of the season and the’ fix ‘would come good …finally ! And obviously it did not quite turn out like that …hence the continual bitching and objections …and accusations ! And if this was all true …would you be surprised and shocked at the bent corruption of it all ?
The Scottish Premiership is decided over 38 games spread over 9 months, not by a couple of matches in the last couple of weeks. We’ve all had VAR decisions go for us and against us. Celtic put together a winning run – the form of Hearts, especially away from home, was poor after New Year, and Rangers flopped completely after the split. Both Hearts and Rangers had the chance to finish above an underwhelming Celtic team, and both failed to take it, end of story.
