Jason Cundy has made a fool of himself.
Celtic lose 4–1 to Benfica and Cundy decides this is his moment to declare that they should not bother playing in Europe, that Scottish clubs are playground leftovers and that every English club is bigger than the Old Firm.
It is a remarkable amount of certainty from a man offering next to nothing in the way of evidence.
A loud rant is not football knowledge
Celtic were poor in Lisbon. Their European campaign has been nowhere near good enough. Supporters know it, and the team and club deserve criticism.
But “why even bother?” is not analysis. It is a cheap, sneering punchline. Cundy takes one dreadful performance and uses it to ridicule an entire club, its supporters and Scottish football. That is not courageous commentary. It is lazy radio bluster dressed up as expertise.
Then he tells Celtic they cannot live off history. Fine: history does not excuse current failures. But dismissing Celtic’s past while lecturing people about football makes Cundy sound spectacularly ignorant of the subject he is discussing.
Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup, beating Inter Milan in Lisbon in 1967. That achievement does not guarantee future success. It does make Cundy’s sneering dismissal look painfully shallow.
“Every one of them” is a clown’s argument
Cundy says every English club is bigger than Celtic and Rangers. Every one? On what measure? He offers no serious comparison, no figures and no definition of “bigger”. Just a sweeping claim delivered with the smug confidence of someone who assumes nobody will challenge him.
English football has vastly greater financial power. That is obvious. It does not prove every English club has a stronger history, bigger support or greater European legacy than Celtic. Cundy muddles those measures together, then acts as if shouting his conclusion settles the debate. It does not. It makes him look like a clown.
The double standard is glaring
Liverpool were beaten 3–0 by Atalanta at Anfield in 2024 and eliminated from the Europa League 3–1 on aggregate. Nobody sensible concluded Liverpool should stop bothering with Europe or that one disastrous tie erased their standing.
Celtic’s problems are real. So is the gulf in resources. But Cundy’s response is not insight. It is a smug lecture built on insults and lazy generalisations.
Call Celtic’s performance disgraceful if you want. Criticise the club as hard as you like. But if Cundy wants to be taken seriously, he should try making an argument that survives basic scrutiny.
This one does not. It is loud, shallow and embarrassingly foolish. Celtic were exposed in Lisbon. With this rant, Cundy exposed himself.
I have no time for these radio shows that depend on people phoning in to get a response keeping them in a job but cundy is not entirely wrong here. Our record in europe is a disgrace that is the truth.
