For 18 months, Jota was watching Celtic from the outside. His return to the pitch brought the cheers, the familiar green-and-white shirt and the feeling that one of the club’s most popular players was finally back. But behind that moment was a recovery that took a far heavier toll than supporters could see.
In an interview published by Celtic, the winger spoke openly about the psychological strain of being unable to play. He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in April 2025, then endured a setback that required keyhole surgery and kept him out for the rest of last season.
Jota said the day of the injury feels blurred in his memory. He wondered whether his mind had tried to erase it. The hardest part, he explained, was feeling that a part of himself had gone away, with no certainty about when it would return.
A long road back
Professional football can make the time between injury and recovery sound simple: surgery, rehabilitation, training, then a return to the squad. Jota’s words describe something more difficult. He spoke of football being part of everyday life, then suddenly disappearing. “You just feel empty with no floor,” he said.
That is a striking way to describe what an injury can take from a player. It is not only the matches or the routine. It is the connection to the game, the team and the version of yourself you recognise.
Even after returning to training, the work was far from finished. Jota described the slow progress of recovery, saying that “every day you get one per cent better” could be enough to go home and sleep well. That small, daily improvement carried him through a process that stretched on far longer than first expected.
The welcome was only the beginning
When Jota came on as a substitute against Motherwell, Celtic supporters gave him a huge reception. He admitted he was so focused on the match that he only fully took in the moment afterwards, when he watched videos of the crowd’s reaction.
Now he wants to become the best version of himself again and “give a smile to Celtic fans.” Those words carry real weight after everything he has described. His comeback was an emotional milestone, but it was not the finish line.
Celtic still have to manage his return carefully. For Jota, the challenge is to build himself back, step by step, and rediscover what the injury took away.
The noise at Fir Park showed how much supporters had missed him. His own account shows what it cost him to get there.
