Martin O’Neill’s position as Celtic manager has become untenable. Following today’s 2-0 defeat at Falkirk, the Hoops have now won just three of their last ten matches, losing six.
Under normal circumstances, there would be little debate about what happens next. Results of that nature demand decisive action, particularly at a club accustomed to competing for every domestic trophy.
However, Celtic have created a rather extraordinary problem for themselves.
The manager needs replaced, but who on earth trusts the people responsible for appointing his successor?
Celtic Have Already Been Here Before
Remember how we arrived at this situation.
When the club needed an experienced figure to steady the ship, O’Neill answered the call. His initial intervention provided some much-needed stability, but the board subsequently had to identify a longer-term solution.
Their answer was Wilfried Nancy.
Personally, I never understood the logic of appointing somebody whose tactical approach required extensive preparation, only to throw him into the middle of a season without the benefit of a proper pre-season.
Predictably, that experiment failed, and Celtic returned to the familiar comfort of O’Neill.
Now the safety net has disappeared.
We cannot turn to Martin O’Neill to rescue Martin O’Neill.
Who Trusts The Next Appointment?
That’s the frightening reality facing Celtic supporters tonight.
Replacing the manager might be necessary, but appointing the wrong successor could make an already difficult situation considerably worse.
Unfortunately, the board’s recent record offers me absolutely no confidence that they’ll get this decision right.
The same individuals who oversaw the Nancy appointment would once again be entrusted with selecting the person tasked with rescuing Celtic’s season.
What a ridiculous position for this football club to find itself in.
O’Neill must go, but the responsibility cannot stop at the dugout.
Celtic need a new manager. More importantly, they need new leadership capable of choosing the right one.
Keep Your Eyes On The Board.
Sadly, I don’t think we have reached rock bottom. The midfield has been shocking since day one far to easy to bully and manipulate and this put’s pressure on a shaky defence that are trying to stop the rot.The goalkeeper Johnston is a liability too and shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team squad. The pressure is building and a lot of those player’s will not be able to handle it when it comes.
