Celtic have been fined €10,000 after a being found guilty of displaying an “illicit banner” during their first leg play-off tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva last month.
Prior to kick off, fans stood outside with Palestinian flags and chanted in support of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Many people questioned the impact the display would have, but on social media, lots of people debated the matter and seen the positive reaction to the display via the hashtag #ThanksCelticFans.
Thousands of people also rallied to #MatchTheFineForPalestine, and raised over £170,000 on a GoFundMe page.
Controversy surrounds the inclusion of Israeli clubs in European competition, even though it is not in Europe – a decision ironically clouded by politics.
Celtic have been fined nine times – totalling £119,350 – in the last five seasons for fan behaviour, and were warned before kick off about any political messages at the game.
However, unlike previous fines, this one is worth the cause in many fans eyes, who see it as the perfect platform to send a message about a cause they believe in.
Judging by the reaction on social media, Celtic fans seem to think that have been punished for rules which they believe are outdated.
