Celtic are now considered to be among the favourites in the race to sign Bolton youngster Luca Connell.
According to the Daily Mail, the highly-rated young midfielder is free to leave Bolton for a move abroad for a bargain fee of just £240,000.
Due to compensation rules, similar to the deal that saw Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham all those years ago, clubs from abroad would only be required to play a small fee to acquire his services this summer.
Connell is expected to leave Bolton in the coming weeks with the club in disarray off the pitch and Celtic are now leading the race to snap him up.
Born in England, Connell is expected to pursue an international career with the Republic of Ireland, having recently been called up to one of their training camps.
It is believed that Celtic’s strong Irish connection could help sway a deal in their favour ahead of other potential suitors.
Why Luca Connell would be great signing for Celtic
A number of Premier League clubs are known to be looking at Connell, who is very highly rated at Bolton. He has huge potential to achieve big things in Scotland, should he join Celtic this summer.
At just £240,000, it is a no brainer for Celtic. Neil Lennon knows that unless he sells, he is going to be working on a limited budget this summer and Connel would be excellent value for money.
Given the fact he looks set to join up with the Republic of Ireland at senior level, a move to Celtic will no doubt appeal to the young versatile midfielder.
Sell on value
While fans don’t want to think about selling a player before he’s even joined, it’s something the club will be aware of. You only have to look at the fee the club received for Moussa Dembele to realise how much they could pocket for Connell three, four, maybe five years down the line.
