Celtic are one of a number of clubs who are reportedly interested in signing Tunisian World Cup star Aissa Laidouni, who currently plays for Ferencvaros.

FootMercato editor-in-chief Sebastien Denis took to Twitter to disclose that the Hoops are one of four teams interested in signing the player, alongside German side Wolfburg and two unnamed English teams.

The Tweet goes on to state that Ferencvaros’ asking price for the 25-year-old is €4m – which is £3.45m.

The defensive midfielder started all three of Tunisia’s games in the 2022 World Cup, including the memorable victory over France.

READ CELTIC VERDICT:

Defensive midfield has been a position where Celtic have played a number of different players since Ange Postecoglou took over as manager, with Hoops captain Callum McGregor being the main man in that role for the majority of the Australian’s tenure as Hoops manager.

It was perhaps hoped that summer signing Oliver Abildgaard would make the role his own for the Hoops, but he has yet to start a game for the Bhoys, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him leave the club at the end of the season.

If the Hoops really want to sign Laidouni, then it looks like the Celtic manager aims to make the defensive midfield role a position that he is willing to pay significant money on to look to improve the Hoops possibly in the second-half of the season and next season onwards.

Should Celtic purchase Laidouni, it could have an impact on the future of a number of other players at the club, as well as the aforementioned Oliver Abildgaard, such as Matt O’Riley and Aaron Mooy, and it would be interesting to see if Callum McGregor started to play further forward for the Hoops, that is something that the Celtic manager will be taking into account when he considers signing a new defensive midfielder.

Celtic have certainly been pro-active in the last few weeks as the Hoops have been adding to the squad for the second-half of the season, and perhaps Laidouni will be the third Celtic signing of the January transfer window, as Postecoglou aims to evolve the Hoops squad in his second season at the club.

Only time will tell if the Hoops do sign the Tunisian international, but their interest in the player is certainly interesting when it comes to the make-up of the Celtic squad.
