As reported recently by the Scotsman, Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes has compared the current Celtic side managed by Ange Postecoglou to the invincible Celtic side of Brendan Rodgers, who went 69 domestic games unbeaten between 2016 and 2017.
That is high praise indeed for the current Hoops side, as the Brendan Rodgers era side have to be considered as one of the greatest Celtic teams in many years, as they dominated the Scottish game in a way that has yet to replicated.

Even though the current Celtic squad is a very good team, they have won 19 of 21 league games played so far this season, they don’t yet compare to the invincible side. Would some Celtic players get into the invincible team?
Well, the captain of the current Celtic side, Callum McGregor, was a regular under Brendan Rodgers, and James Forrest, who is mostly a fringe player for the Hoops these days, was another regular under Rodgers.
But if you look at a player like Cameron Carter-Vickers, he is one of the best centre-backs to have played for the Hoops in a long time. He would have easily fit into the Hoops side which dominated Scottish football in 2016 and 2017.
Jota could also have made an impact for the Rodgers’ side, as his goal scoring ability from the wing would have been a good addition to the squad, and he would have put Scott Sinclair, James Forrest and Patrick Roberts under pressure in the first-team.
The current Hoops side doesn’t really compare to the Rodgers side in a way as Rodgers was coming into Celtic from a position of strength, whilst Postecoglou has had to rebuild a Hoops side which failed miserable when trying to win a 10th title in a row.

Celtic have been fortunate to have many good teams in the club’s history, but it is too early to judge just where the current Hoops squad fits into Celtic history. If the current squad can win a few more league titles, then it could well be considered as a great Celtic side, and one of the best that the Hoops have been fortunate to have in a few years.
But at the moment, the current Hoops squad does not compare to the invincible Celtic side, no matter what Derek McInnes says. Perhaps in a few years time Ange Postecoglou’s side will be remembered as just as good as Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side, but there is still a long way to go for that to happen yet.
