No Club in Europe Has Failed More Often Than Celtic in Champions League Qualifying – The Board Must Answer
Celtic hold the unwanted record for the most Champions League qualifying eliminations in Europe. With LASK next and the squad weaker than last season, supporters have every right to question the board.

The statistic is as embarrassing as it is alarming.
According to compiled figures from the modern Champions League era, Celtic have suffered 12 qualifying eliminations since 2000 – more than any other club in Europe.
To put that into perspective, Dinamo Zagreb sit second on the list with nine qualifying failures. Red Bull Salzburg are next with eight, while Fenerbahçe and Rosenborg have each fallen short seven times. Sparta Prague complete the leading group on six.
Celtic aren’t just top of this unwanted table.
They are clear at the top.
That should concern every supporter because this isn’t the result of one bad manager, one poor squad or one disastrous season. It has become a pattern spanning more than two decades.
This is not a record supporters should be proud of. It is a record that raises serious questions about the people making the biggest decisions at Celtic Park.
Yet every summer we hear the same defence.
“Celtic qualify for Europe every season.”
But let’s be honest. That argument simply doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.
Fail to reach the Champions League and Celtic still drop into the Europa League. European football is virtually guaranteed. The real test is qualifying for Europe’s elite competition, and on that measure Celtic’s record is the worst in Europe.
That is the standard supporters should judge this board against.
The Same Mistakes Every Summer
Look back at the names.
AEK Athens.
CFR Cluj.
Ferencváros.
FC Midtjylland.
Kairat Almaty.
Different managers.
Different squads.
The same outcome.
The common denominator has been the boardroom.
Every transfer window seems to follow an identical script. Players leave. Negotiations drag on. Recruitment moves at a snail’s pace. Important qualifiers arrive before the squad is ready.
Supporters have watched this cycle repeat itself for years.
The comparison with the other clubs makes the statistic even more damning. Celtic’s 12 qualifying failures leave them three clear of Dinamo Zagreb, four ahead of Red Bull Salzburg and five ahead of clubs like Fenerbahçe and Rosenborg. For a club that regularly speaks about Champions League ambitions and enjoys revenues that dwarf many of those sides, it is an astonishing record to hold.
Instead of setting the standard, Celtic have become the benchmark for qualifying disappointment.
How many more examples are needed before lessons are finally learned?
LASK Could Be Another Painful Reminder
Now Celtic head towards a huge Champions League qualifier against Austrian champions LASK.
The timing could hardly be worse.
Fifteen players have left.
Only two have arrived.
Can anyone genuinely argue this squad is better prepared than it was a few months ago?
Or are supporters once again watching a board gamble with the club’s biggest objective of the season?
The Champions League is where Celtic belong, both competitively and financially.
Every failure carries enormous sporting and financial consequences.
Yet the urgency in the transfer market never seems to match the importance of the occasion.
The board have had months to prepare for this moment, yet Celtic approach one of the biggest games of the season with a weaker squad than the one that finished the last campaign. That is not bad luck. It is the consequence of decisions made at the top of the club.
Supporters Deserve Better
The resources have been there.
The transfer income has been there.
The Champions League prize money has been there.
The support has certainly been there.
So why does the same story keep unfolding?
At some point accountability has to sit with those making the decisions.
Supporters aren’t demanding miracles.
They are demanding competence.
If another failure follows against LASK, the conversation can no longer be about bad luck or fine margins. It will be about a board that has overseen the worst Champions League qualifying record in Europe and still appears determined to repeat the same mistakes.
Supporters have watched 15 players leave and only two arrive. They are entitled to ask why urgency is always missing when Champions League qualification is worth tens of millions of pounds.
This is an unwanted record that no club in Europe wants.
Unfortunately, it belongs to Celtic.
And unless something changes at boardroom level, there is a genuine fear that this season will simply add another chapter to a story supporters are sick of reading.

Pretty shocking that any current board members responsible for costing the club possibly £300+million in lost revenue are still employed is fkn disgusting and deplorable , what do these morons need to do to be sacked !
All we ever do is moan about what the board are NOT doing or supposed to be doing. I have said time and time again to boycott Celtic park. Simply don’t go to the games but we keep going back and the board know it. Their laughing up their sleeves at us and we’ve only goy ourselves to blame because its surley clear by now they don’t care about the club.
