Two games later, Celtic are five points clear.
Football has a wonderful habit of preserving predictions, and this one could become an absolute classic.
Cameron did not merely suggest Rangers might challenge Celtic. He went considerably further.
Ewen Cameron backed Derek McInnes to deliver the title
On July 27, Cameron posted on X:
“Derek McInnes is the signing of the season so far, Rangers WILL win the league!!”
Not might.
Not could.
“WILL win the league”
Those are Cameron’s words, complete with capital letters and exclamation marks.
Such extraordinary confidence deserves scrutiny when reality immediately starts heading in the opposite direction.
McInnes has been involved in management for almost two decades. Yet his collection of major trophies as a manager consists of precisely one.
For clarity, it was not the Scottish Cup.
Aberdeen lifted the Scottish League Cup under McInnes in 2014. They defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle on penalties following a goalless final.
That remains his only major managerial honour.
McInnes has never won the Scottish Premiership.
Apparently, none of that prevented Cameron from deciding his arrival at Ibrox made Rangers champions-elect.
Celtic are already five points clear
Two Premiership matches have now been played.
Celtic have won both.
Rangers have won neither.
That leaves Celtic five points ahead of McInnes and his new side.
Some “signing of the season”.
Of course, the title is not decided after two matches. There is an enormous amount of football still to play.
Cameron could eventually be proved correct.
However, anyone making such an emphatic prediction before the season begins cannot complain when it gets revisited.
Calling McInnes the “signing of the season” was bold enough.
Declaring Rangers “WILL win the league” took it somewhere else entirely.
Perhaps Cameron saw something the rest of Scottish football missed.
Right now, Celtic supporters are seeing something rather different.
They are watching their team sitting five points ahead while Cameron’s guaranteed title winners search for their first Premiership victory.
McInnes may eventually turn things around.
Until then, Cameron’s prediction is sitting there on X for everyone to enjoy.
Celtic fans might want to bookmark it.
