Celtic have been linked with an ambitious move for Colombian international Yaser Asprilla as the transfer window gathers pace.
The 22-year-old Girona winger has emerged as a reported Celtic target, with Martin O’Neill looking to add further first-team quality to his squad.
Asprilla certainly comes with an impressive pedigree.
Girona paid around £16million to sign him from Watford in 2024, making him the most expensive signing in the Spanish club’s history.
However, his future has become uncertain following Girona’s relegation to the Segunda División.
Celtic target Yaser Asprilla receives huge praise
Asprilla spent part of last season on loan at Galatasaray before returning to Girona.
Crucially, new Girona boss Quique Álvarez appears impressed with what he has seen.
Speaking after Asprilla featured against Leganés, Álvarez said the winger was “brave” and demanded possession before adding: “I want players like that.”
The manager also indicated that Asprilla has demonstrated his commitment to Girona.
That appears to make a Celtic move more difficult, particularly because the Colombian is contracted until 2030.
Yet the door may not be completely closed.
Spanish reports claim Girona could consider another loan if a deal suited everyone involved. No official proposal had reached the club when that report was published.
Celtic should be watching this situation closely
Asprilla would represent an extremely exciting addition if Celtic could somehow find a workable agreement.
Primarily a right winger, the Colombian can operate across the attacking positions and offers creativity, pace and unpredictability.
This isn’t a completely new name either.
Celtic were linked with Asprilla during the January window, when it was reported that the club had approached Girona about his availability.
With Champions League football potentially on the horizon, this is exactly the calibre of player Celtic should be exploring.
Whether interest develops into an actual bid remains to be seen.
For now, Asprilla is one to watch very closely before the window closes.
