Celtic have taken a major step towards signing Joël van den Berg after reportedly submitting a formal bid for the highly-rated PSV Eindhoven midfielder.
The 19-year-old has been on Celtic’s radar throughout the closing stages of the window, but this latest development moves the deal beyond interest and negotiations.
According to Dutch reporting, PSV have now received an offer from Celtic and the transfer is being described as “imminent”.
That represents genuine progress.
Celtic Joël van den Berg transfer moves closer
Van den Berg has emerged as one of Celtic’s most intriguing late-window targets.
He is a box-to-box midfielder with size, physical presence and an ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.
Last season, he registered seven goals and four assists at development level, while also breaking into PSV’s senior side.
He has continued that momentum this season, scoring twice in his opening three appearances for Jong PSV.
At 19, he remains a developing player rather than the finished article. However, there is plenty about his profile that should excite Celtic supporters.
The midfield has lacked running power, athleticism and physical presence at times. Van den Berg appears capable of bringing exactly those qualities.
Celtic bid could unlock PSV agreement
The most important development is that Celtic have now apparently moved from discussions to an actual bid.
Dutch reports also indicate PSV expect Van den Berg to leave before the window shuts.
That does not mean Celtic should consider the deal complete.
There is still no official confirmation of an accepted offer, medical or signed contract. Until those boxes are ticked, caution remains necessary.
Nevertheless, this now looks considerably more advanced than the usual transfer rumour.
Celtic have identified the player. Van den Berg is reportedly open to the move. A formal bid has now been made.
Everything appears to be moving in one direction.
For a Celtic midfield desperately requiring greater energy and mobility, Van den Berg could become one of the most interesting additions of the summer.
Now Celtic need to finish the job.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Celtic have reportedly submitted a formal bid for Joël van den Berg.
- Dutch reporting describes the transfer as “imminent”.
- PSV expect the 19-year-old midfielder to leave.
- Van den Berg offers physicality, running power and attacking output.
- No accepted bid or medical has yet been officially confirmed.
It feels like the previous article was set up to make this one more palatable.
Would have felt ok about this signing if it came along with the original players linked but substituting international players for single digits appearance prospects should have the fans furious.
The closing stages of the transfer window translates as “since we were knocked out of the champions league “
We can only look forward to the usual transfer window ending of development players and loan signings without any option to buy. Funny how we can manage to get these transfers completed quickly yet take forever then fail to complete long term targets.
He is a 19 year old development player. There is no way he is walking into Celtics midfield. It is strange that we haven’t heard of this ‘interest’ before now(or should I say until after Wednesday) and seems to me that this is yet another last stage of the transfer window panic buy from Nicholson in an attempt to appease the, quite rightly, disgruntled fans.
