The Celtic Fans Collective have responded to that extraordinary statement from Celtic last night – and, unsurprisingly, they aren’t backing down.
It came out when I was live on The Bhoycie Bus, which was fun to read out!
After Celtic announced they would cease engagement with the Collective following the tennis-ball protest at St Andrews, the supporters’ group have now issued their initial response.
And one part in particular jumped straight off the page at me.
The Collective believe Celtic’s statement was issued “almost certainly at the behest” of Dermot Desmond.
It goes on, describing the club’s principal shareholder as “notoriously thin-skinned”.
That is some accusation but one I wholeheartedly subscribe to, but the wider point they make is one we’ve been discussing since last night…
Where is this level of urgency when things are going wrong on the football pitch?
Are there enormous statements when transfer windows go wrong, European campaigns end in disappointment or supporters are demanding answers about how Celtic is being run?
Yet a few tennis balls land on a golf course while Dermot Desmond is playing and suddenly Celtic can produce an enormous statement within hours.
The Collective also accused the club of a “disgraceful mischaracterisation” of their organisation and made it perfectly clear that Celtic cutting off engagement isn’t going to make this disappear.
That’s perhaps the biggest takeaway from all of this.
Celtic’s statement was clearly designed to draw a line in the sand. Instead, it looks like the battle lines have simply become even clearer.
The Collective say a more detailed response will follow, and you suspect this story has plenty of mileage left in it.
One thing is certain: the relationship between Celtic’s hierarchy and a significant section of the support isn’t improving.
If anything, after this weekend, it has just become considerably worse.
Keep Your Eyes On The Board.
