Kirk Broadfoot was happy to tell goalkeeper Lee Robinson to “take it in the dish” after Rangers lost the Tennent’s Sixes final to Celtic. But when Broadfoot is handing out lessons after a fun legends tournament, a little perspective might help.
Footage from inside the Rangers dressing room appears to show Broadfoot berating Robinson, saying the keeper had faced seven shots across the tournament and should have dealt with one. Rangers had just lost 5-4 to Celtic after beating them 7-1 the previous day. The rivalry was alive, but this was still a six-a-side event for former players — not a full cup final.
Broadfoot’s own costly Celtic moment
Broadfoot has been involved in far bigger moments himself. In the 2009 League Cup final, he was sent off after fouling Aiden McGeady in extra time. McGeady scored the resulting penalty as Celtic beat Rangers 2-0.
That was a genuine high-pressure game, with silverware at stake. The Tennent’s Sixes was meant to be a bit of fun. So Broadfoot’s furious lecture to a teammate over one goalkeeping moment feels wildly over the top. If you’re going to tell someone else to take responsibility, you should expect people to remember your own costly mistakes.
The “dish” line brings back the egg
There is another reason the clip has struck a nerve with Celtic fans. Broadfoot once ended up in hospital after a microwave-poached egg exploded as he inspected it, leaving him with facial burns. He was already out of the Rangers team with a foot injury.
That was an accident, and there is no need to pretend otherwise. But the image of Broadfoot shouting about taking it “in the dish” while his own most famous kitchen story involves an egg going spectacularly wrong is almost too perfect. Celtic players have already joined in with the joke.
A legends tournament, not a crisis
Broadfoot may have been furious because losing to Celtic stung. That is understandable. But the angry dressing-room outburst makes the whole thing look more serious than it was. Robinson had a bad moment; Broadfoot turned it into a dressing-room scene.
Celtic won the final, the former players got their bragging rights, and the clip gave everyone a laugh. Broadfoot should probably let the joke land. After all, nobody comes out of this story looking more “in the dish” than the man who started shouting.
Sky dish rocket is he for sure !
