There is something increasingly troubling about the way Celtic appear to be approaching their managerial future. And once again, the uncomfortable questions lead directly to Dermot Desmond and those entrusted with running our football club.
According to a fresh report from Football Insider‘s Pete O’Rourke, Celtic have no immediate plans to replace Martin O’Neill, with the board apparently content to continue backing the experienced manager.
On the surface, that sounds reassuring.
Look a little closer, however, and an altogether more disturbing question emerges.
Does Dermot Desmond actually have a convincing long-term plan for Celtic?
Martin O’Neill Deserves Better Than This Uncertainty
Let me make one thing absolutely clear. Martin O’Neill has earned enormous respect at Celtic, and rightly so.
His achievements, his understanding of this club and his extraordinary contribution to its history should never be diminished.
But sentiment cannot become a substitute for strategy.
O’Neill is 74 years old. He has already provided Celtic with remarkable service, including returning to guide the club through an exceptionally difficult period.
Surely the responsibility now lies with the people above him to establish what comes next?
Instead, supporters are left examining reports, interpreting statements and wondering whether anyone inside Celtic Park has a coherent vision extending beyond the immediate future.
That is not how a club of Celtic’s stature should operate.
Dermot Desmond Cannot Keep Avoiding the Bigger Question
What concerns me most is the apparent absence of urgency.
Football Insider reports that Celtic are not actively assessing immediate replacements, although longer-term candidates have been considered.
That does not establish that succession planning has stopped. But it certainly raises questions about how advanced those preparations really are.
And supporters deserve answers.
What is the managerial blueprint? What style of football is Celtic attempting to establish? Who is responsible for ensuring recruitment supports that philosophy?
These are not unreasonable demands.
They are fundamental questions that any professionally governed football club should be capable of answering.
Yet under Desmond’s influence, Celtic too often appear to operate through short-term decisions rather than a clearly communicated long-term strategy.
Celtic Cannot Afford Another Managerial Scramble
We have already witnessed the consequences of managerial instability.
The disastrous Wilfried Nancy appointment should have prompted serious reflection about how Celtic identify, assess and appoint their managers.
Instead, there remains a legitimate concern that another major decision could eventually be taken under unnecessary pressure.
That would be unforgivable.
The next Celtic manager should be selected through a thorough, ambitious recruitment process, not simply because circumstances have suddenly forced the board’s hand.
Whether that individual is Kieran McKenna, another emerging coach or an established European manager, the process must be driven by footballing ambition.
Not convenience.
The Responsibility Lies Above the Dugout
I have absolutely no objection to Martin O’Neill receiving the support he deserves.
My objection is to the possibility that his continued presence becomes an excuse for postponing difficult decisions.
Celtic need stability, but stability without direction is merely standing still.
Dermot Desmond and Michael Nicholson cannot reasonably expect supporters to accept indefinite uncertainty while being asked to trust that everything is under control.
This football club deserves a strategy worthy of its history, resources and enormous support.
And if Desmond believes that strategy already exists, perhaps it is time Celtic supporters were given something more substantial than another reassurance.
Because the question is no longer simply who manages Celtic today.
It is whether those running Celtic genuinely know where they intend to take the club tomorrow.
Good article – I cannot see them giving anything to Martin in January if as he says he is offski in May !
We all know. In our hearts what’s going to happen .
The Board will wait till the 27/28 Season Book tills close.
Then DD will open his wee black book and announce Lennon or Strachan ( Senior or Junior doesn’t matter to him) as Manager/Coach.
The 2026/27 CLUB AGM if it’s not behind an internet paywall will be chaired by NepoBhaby who will read a Statement from his ‘Da’ telling the Celtic Support it’s his Club and there’s feck all we can do.
