Pat Bonner’s Celtic spending claim deserves scrutiny after he linked transfer fees to supporter demands following the defeat by Celta Vigo.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, in comments reported by 67 Hail Hail, Bonner argued that expensive arrivals were failing to deliver. He suggested Celtic were spending heavily “because the fans are demanding it”.
I agree that recruitment needs examination. However, bringing supporters’ demands into that explanation risks letting the people making the decisions escape proper scrutiny.
Celtic fans do not run recruitment
What are supporters actually demanding? A team capable of competing in Europe. A squad with balance, depth and enough quality to handle pressure.
That is a reasonable expectation for Celtic.
Fans do not negotiate contracts. They do not approve transfer fees, conduct medicals or decide which players suit the manager’s system. Those responsibilities belong to the professionals employed to make football decisions.
If a signing costs serious money and fails, the relevant question concerns the process that identified and approved him.
The volume of noise outside the boardroom cannot replace that examination.
When supporters ask for stronger recruitment, they are asking the club to use its judgement well. That expectation should sharpen accountability at Celtic.
Spending money is only the beginning
Bonner’s broader concern about quality is fair. Celtic’s 2–1 defeat left them without a point after three Europa League matches.
As our analysis of Celtic’s four consecutive European defeats argued, recruitment and coaching both deserve scrutiny.
Yet spending a substantial fee proves only that money changed hands. It tells us little about whether the player addresses a weakness or improves the team.
I want Celtic to recruit intelligently. That means clear priorities, proper assessment and a coherent plan for how each arrival will contribute.
Supporters should never have to choose between ambition and competence. The club should provide both.
Accountability belongs with Celtic’s decision-makers
Our coverage of the world media’s reaction to Celtic’s European decline underlined how widely these shortcomings are being noticed.
Bonner was criticising the players and recruitment. He did not say supporters selected the squad. Nevertheless, his explanation needs challenging.
Why should fans lower their expectations because the people responsible struggle to meet them?
Players must perform. Coaches must improve the team. The board must ensure the football operation has the expertise to turn investment into progress.
Demanding better is part of supporting Celtic. Delivering better is the responsibility of those running the club.
Nicholson is not a professional in regards to football issues but then again does he make any decisions that is the big question ?
