There was one comment from Martin O’Neill after Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Dundee United that I cannot quite get my head around.
While much of the attention has focused on Callum McGregor’s honest assessment of Celtic’s tactical problems, I think one of O’Neill’s own responses deserves considerably more scrutiny.
Asked about the disappointment of dropping points at home, particularly with our title rivals also failing to win, O’Neill admitted:
“Considering the trials and tribulations over the last number of weeks, yeah, I’m not totally dissatisfied.”
Not totally dissatisfied?
I understand the circumstances. Celtic have had injuries, uncertainty around the squad, and a number of players still trying to find their best form. But surely we have to expect more than simply accepting another disappointing result?
We conceded twice in three minutes against Dundee United. We have struggled to control matches, our attacking structure has been questioned by our own captain, and we have now gone eight games with just one clean sheet.
Yet the manager’s response was that he was not entirely unhappy.
For me, that is where the concern lies. We are Celtic. Dropping points at home against Dundee United should not be something we look at through the lens of how difficult the previous few weeks have been. It should be judged against the standards expected of this football club.
What makes the comment even more interesting is that McGregor was considerably more critical when discussing the team’s performances. Our captain openly admitted that we lack defined profiles in attacking positions and that games are becoming like basketball because we keep losing control of possession.
Those are serious concerns, and they are coming from inside the dressing room.
I am not suggesting O’Neill should come out and publicly criticise every player after a difficult result. There is a balance between protecting confidence and demanding higher standards.
But supporters need to see a manager who recognises the scale of the problems and is determined to address them.
Being four points clear at the top of the league is welcome, but it cannot become an excuse for performances that are nowhere near the level we expect.
Celtic supporters are not asking for perfection. We are asking for standards.
And when we are dropping points at Celtic Park, struggling for control and hearing our captain highlight fundamental tactical problems, I would rather hear that the manager is deeply dissatisfied and determined to put things right.
Because the danger is that we become too comfortable with being just good enough.

Continually airing our dirty linen in public…shows how far we have fallen…There is no problem with MON giving his tuppenceworth…( well there is…but that’s for another day)…However…when the Captain and CCV openly criticise stuff…forcing MON to comment…We have real problems…Maybe, eventually, it will prove beneficial..but its not a good look…So please guys…GET IT SORTED.
I would have thought that the captain’s comments the other day were for the training ground and dressing room only ? To give the salivating anti Celtic FC scoops ammunition to fire back and do serious impairment with their criticism orally and particularly in print was a bit on the daft side ..to put it mildly . Fix it internally ! Don’t wash your dirty laundry of sorts in public . All it does is give those snide and sneering scoops plenty of bullets in which to spray in an adverse way causing deliberate damages. Tell them nothing ….and preferably give 3 word answers to loaded questions …always at pressers . They will soon get the message .
