Brendan Rodgers was happy with his side’s overall performance as Celtic dominated Motherwell at Paradise yesterday.
The win ensured Rodgers’ unbeaten home run continued as well as their unbeaten domestic run, which is a promising sign of the quality in the current team.
While the boss was delighted with the three points, he was particularly admirable of youngsters Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele. Tierney, who picked up yet another Man of the Match award, received a standing ovation from the Celtic fans just before half-time after his silky skill and tenacious work rate to get past three defenders almost earned him a rare goal.
As quoted by The Scotsman, Rodgers commented on the 19-year-old, saying:
What I love about Kieran is first and foremost he’s a defender. He’s aggressive, he gets up to people, he blocks, he tackles. He’s fearless in that way but he’s showing that extra bit of quality now on the ball.
That dribble was absolutely brilliant and unfortunate it never went in. He was excellent again today.
Another promising performance from the young full-back indeed, though he was only one of two players Rodgers hailed. French under-21 international striker bagged his 13th goal of the season after slotting home a penalty in the 86th minute, his first since winning the Premiership Player of the Month award for September.
Speaking about Dembele, Rodgers added:
I said to the players before the game, for us to succeed it is not just about us being hungry it is about us being starving, you have to really really push yourself the moment when you think things are gone.
The best strikers do that in my experience. They make something out of nothing. His endeavour, quality and mindset made that and he tucked it away really well.
Tierney and Dembele will both look to play starring roles for Celtic in their crucial midweek clash against German side Borussia Monchengladbach who drew 0-0 yesterday (Saturday) against Hamburg.
Rodgers also revealed why Tom, Rogic, Mikael Lustig and Nir Bitton didn’t feature for Celtic in the 2-0 win for various reasons and gave updates on their status ahead of Wednesday night.
