Gordon set for bumper contract amidst Chelsea interest

Manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly keen in offering goalkeeper Craig Gordon an improve contract after he was linked with a move to Chelsea recently.

The 34-year-old ‘keeper has fought to retain his place in the starting eleven this season, with his performances attracting interest from Antonio Conte’s side.

Though Rodgers wants to keep Gordon at the Hoops and is prepared to offer him a new deal in reward for his performances this season.

From the Daily Record, Rodgers said:

Craig is enjoying it here, but as a club, we have to look after him as well. That’s the message. I always say: Look after the roof when it’s sunny. Don’t wait to fix it when it’s raining.

The best clubs do that and Craig is in a brilliant position now. He’s in pole position. I made it clear that he is someone we want to keep and that, of course, will be looked at. That’s natural.

The message is simple. There are 18 months left and I have absolutely no interest in selling him, especially with four days left in a window. Craig’s a player I have spoken about to the people at the club and said I had wanted to retain long before this interest.

What we are trying to build here is quite an exciting period and I want him to be a big part of that. I’d want Craig to be here for the next three or four years.

With Rodgers making it clear that he has no intention of selling the Scottish International and the transfer deadline just a few days away, it’s very unlikely that Gordon will be going anywhere.

A move to Chelsea would limit his game-time given the London club already have Thibaut Courtois between the sticks.

Gordon, who used to play with Sunderland in England’s top-flight, has had a large role to play in his side’s superb start to the season.

The Hoops lead the Scottish Premiership by 19-points and still have a game in hand over second place.

They play Hearts at home tomorrow as they look to go 27 games unbeaten and break the Lisbon Lions’ 50-year-old record.
