FC Basel defender and Swiss international Silvan Widmer has emerged as a potential transfer target for the Hoops.
According to the print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail, as cited on HITC, the club have ‘ran checks’ on the player, with Neil Lennon still keen to add another defender to his ranks.
It had previously been reported that Lennon was eager to sign another right-back, despite completing a deal to bring in Hatem Abd Elhamed.
With Mikael Lustig departing the club this summer, the Celtic boss wants to ensure that the Hoops have sufficient quality available to them in the right-back position going forward.
Interestingly, Widmer only joined Basel from Italian side Udinese last summer, meaning he could be a player that comes in and pushes for a starting spot straight away, despite the recent addition of Abd Elhamed.
With Basel spending just over £4 million on the Swiss international at the time, it appears unlikely that he would be sold on the cheap.
