One-time Celtic target Aaron Hickey has gone viral for a long-ranged curling goal to open his Serie A account with Bologna.

The former Hearts youngster made a high-profile move to the Italian club, only for his debut campaign to be dampened with Hickey requiring shoulder surgery at the start of 2021.

Celtic were in the market for a new left-back this summer as Ange Postecoglou went on the hunt for a new reinforcement, but Celtic were reportedly quoted as much as £6.8m for the Scottish talent [Il Resto del Carlino, print edition, 06/07/2021, page 68].

As a result, Celtic pulled out of the possibility of striking a deal with a view to shifting their attention elsewhere.

In defence, the club eventually recruited the likes of centre-half Liam Scales – who can also play at left-back – and Josip Juranovic, who is normally a right-back but has found himself on the opposite flank in some recent games.

Moreover, academy product Adam Montgomery is increasingly making his way into the first team in a sure-fire sign of increased trust and responsibility being afforded to him by Ange Postecoglou.

However, his goal – a strike that made him only the fourth male Scottish player to score in Serie A history – went viral on Twitter for its silky accuracy, as shared by broadcaster BT Sport.

Hickey looks to be a fine young prospect with the potential to improve, and Celtic could yet revitalise their interest in the Scotland-grown talent.

Will Celtic one day sign Hickey?

Yes

No

His goal in the 2-2 draw with Genoa was emblematic of a resurgence in form.

Hickey has started all five of Bologna’s Serie A matches so far this season and Sinisa Mihajlovic, the Bologna head coach, is clearly keeping faith in his ability.
