There was a seismic shift in Celtic cyberspace yesterday.
For the first time since I became interested in the online Celtic community, a blogger was asked to remove an opinion piece.
We all know the blogger in question.
And we all know why he was asked to remove the piece in question.
So, why was he targeted?
What was it he said that was so bad that he was threatened in the way he was if he didn’t remove it?
In order to understand that, we need to look at a few different things.
In the Celtic blogosphere, there are several different factions.
The first faction are the clickbait merchants.
These are the kind of bloggers who name sites like Football Fancast or Football Insider as their sources.
They write blogs based on info provided by websites who know nothing whatsoever about what’s going on at Celtic.
Using a headline that draws you in, you will then get into the story and learn absolutely nothing you didn’t know already.
They are not interested in Celtic, rather, they are interested in what they can make out of Celtic.
Then there’s the second faction, they are the happy clappers.
Personally, I have no issue with these guys.
They report good news stories about Celtic all the time, which is their prerogative.
They choose to ignore the things that frustrate the fans, instead focusing on stories that are designed to make the fanbase happy.
Nothing at all wrong with that.
Other than the fact there is a hell of a lot going on beneath the surface, which they probably know about, but choose to leave to one side.
Ultimately, they choose the path of least resistance.
That is instead, left to likes of the third faction.
I would consider myself part of the third faction.
James Forrest and Joe McHugh are also part of this faction.
We are not afraid to challenge the club.
In doing so, we are not afraid to raise the topics that are a constant bugbear to the more “in tune” Celtic fans out there.
Actually, it is probably more appropriate for me to link the three blogging factions to the factions we have in our fanbase.
The clickbait faction would be linked to the kind of Celtic fans who really only have a passing interest in the club.
They’re not heavily invested in the club, and news of any kind is just news to them.
They go with the flow.
You will often still hear them refer to the Glasgow Derby as the “O** F***.”
That speaks for itself really.
The happy clappers faction would be linked to Celtic fans who are happy with their lot.
Beating the Ibrox side on a regular basis is enough for them.
As long as they can slag their Ibrox counterparts at work, then that keeps them happy, and amused.
They will consistently hand over the money season after season, without question.
The general consensus amongst these fans is that the board is doing a good job.
The reality is that they don’t really care, and they find it hard to comprehend it when people question the board.
You’ll get, “Well we’re the most financially stable we’ve ever been as a club, what’s the problem?”
Or, “Top class players don’t want to play in Scotland, we have a very small pool to choose from.”
When you ask them what the benefit of having all that money sitting in the bank is, they will struggle to answer you.
Then if you ask them who told them top class players don’t want to come to Scotland, they’ll say, “Well, that’s what the board says, so it must be true.”
In other words, they believe everything that is fed to them by the board.
Even though the board feeds them very little.
Board = that’s just the way it is.
Any other opinion = you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Believe me, I have many of these goons in my CSC, so I’m talking from experience.
Finally, you have the fans that we, the third faction, reach out to with our blogs.
These types of fans are heavily invested in Celtic.
They have been supporting the club all of their lives.
They’ve been through the hard times, and the good.
If they haven’t been through the hard times, they’ve educated themselves fully on them.
These fans will have an in depth knowledge of the club and it’s machinations.
If you strike up a conversation with them, they will engage with you immediately.
They’ll tell you what they feel is wrong with the club, and how it could be changed.
There is a common denominator amongst all of these fans, they are not happy with the Celtic board.
They are frustrated beyond belief at the direction the club is headed in.
Or more to the point, the lack of direction at the club.
This element of the fanbase is not huge, but the board knows it is dangerous.
Right now, it is a minor threat, but a threat nonetheless.
The majority of these fans see through the board, and know they are being taken for a ride.
But they persevere out of love for the club.
They consistently talk about not putting their hard-earned cash into the club.
But deep down they know it is a fruitless endeavour, because the happy clappers and the passing interest fans will continue to plough their money into the club.
They are caught between a rock and a hard place.
An emotional battle between their love for the club, and their dislike of the current board.
It is those fans who agree wholeheartedly with what the third blogging faction writes.
So much so, that they defend us steadfastly, and attempt to educate fans who pour scorn on our opinions.
I fear that this too, is a fruitless endeavour.
However, something happened yesterday.
Something different.
James Forrest, in no uncertain terms, was threatened by an individual at the club.
He was informed if he didn’t remove his opinion piece, he would be sued for libel.
This represents a huge shift in attitude from this individual.
For years now, a blind eye has been turned to what the bloggers have been saying about this individual.
He has never cared.
Because it has altered nothing.
He still gets what he gets from the club.
But something cut very close to the bone yesterday, and there was a clear and obvious concern that what James said could go viral.
As I’ve stated before, we bloggers form our opinions based on the patterns that emerge from how we study the club on a daily basis.
Every day, without fail.
In depth.
I wrote an opinion piece yesterday, which has resulted in huge debate.
It is inevitable that somewhere along the line, our opinion, and make no mistake, it is only ever an opinion, will hit the bullseye.
I think this is what happened yesterday.
However, I would go one further and say that mounting opinions from the third faction have been hitting the mark.
It just so happened that yesterday’s opinion might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The one that could have potentially opened the floodgates.
But inadvertently, through the way it was dealt with, actually did.
Threatening a blogger for having an opinion, however factual, is not a good look.
There is an almost Cybernetic element to it.
An attempt at replacing a living, thinking fan, fighting for his club’s interests, with happy clappers, if you’ll excuse the pun.
This individual wants all fans to be unquestioning automatons, ploughing their money into the club.
Year in, year out.
Any threat to that affects who though?
Certainly not the fanbase, or even the club, in fact these opinions are aimed at the betterment of the club.
Put simply, only the individual who feels he is being threatened, is threatened.
Nobody else.
How he believes he is being threatened, well, only he knows that.
I opened this article with a quote from George Orwell; if liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people things they do not want to hear.
Celtic has always championed liberty, that can never be disputed, should never be disputed.
The liberty Orwell refers to should never be challenged.
Celtic fans have a right to know what goes on at their club, since they plough an awful lot of their hard earned money into the club.
They have been denied that right for a long time now.
Yesterday signalled the intent to ensure that right will continue to be denied.
I’ve been a Celtic fan throughout four decades now.
If I was to calculate what I’ve spent throughout those decades supporting this club, it would amount to a small fortune.
I am but one.
Multiply that by a full Celtic Park and the figures would be staggering.
Then add the Celtic fanbase throughout the world.
You get where I’m going with this, don’t you?
Respect the lifeblood of the club, and the lifeblood will respect you.
Actions like yesterday’s will never garner any respect.
We can not, and should never become an institution that attempts to take away the liberty to tell people what they do not want to hear.
Because if we go down that road, how will we ever change as a club?
And now, more than ever, this club needs change.

For 60 years. How much money I’ve given the club in that time who nose.
Another great and incisive piece of writing, hitting the nail squarely on the head again.
The article that appeared yesterday, the one now taken down, was so accurate that it threatened to open the eyes of many fans to just what is happening at Board level. That’s why they got really nervous and insisted on it being taken down – because it exposed the greed for money and the absence of any real ambition to improve the squad. I have just commented on another blog to say that there will be NO quality signings this window – Zero! There will be no Owen Beck, Bueno, Idah or anyone else of their calibre because they all exceed the £4m max limit the suits have placed on player purchases. What they’ll do is bring in a couple of cheap deals, players no one has ever heard of, just to let the fans think they’re trying, but it’s all smoke and mirrors, as is the constant stream of big name players constantly linked with the club. The Board knows how to play the fans – lots of links to quality followed by a few barrel-scraping late additions. My fear is that they are also set to sell Matt O’Riley without replacing him with anyone close to his quality. That article yesterday was too close for comfort and that’s why they started with the threats and intimidation. It’s too late though, we all now know what’s going on!
The story was highly critical of Peter Lawwell’s influence on Celtic in the transfer market; expressing the view that there had been a deliberate policy to downsize and no commitment to competing in Europe. It interestingly looked at the period when Dominic MacKay had been CEO and claimed that a high number of transfer were successfully executed in that time period. His activity had essentially threatened the hidden policy and his departure returned the status quo which, according to the article, is not in the best interest of Celtic. As indicated here the thrust of the argument was not new, but it did appear to be a deeper analysis. However, my own recollection was that Ange had been frustrated with the transfer timescales during the Dominic Mackay period, and there were rumours that Dermott Desmond had to intervene.
We spent well and effectively during Ange’s 2 seasons because we were in trouble and Gio was a good manager for them. If the new Rangers were a well-run club, I’ve no doubt we would be spending well.
The board see Europe as a bonus and nothing more, to them spending more money than needed is a waste of time and an unnecessary gamble.

Over the last year I’ve taken to ignoring anything about who may or may not be signed/leaving until it happens as many stories are just filling space. So I go for the opinion pieces like here and JF – both sites bookmarked. I’m a 50 years plus supporter, loads of books, knowledge etc and perhaps unusually, I couldn’t care less about what other the sides in Glasgow or otherwise are doing; and beating every side is as important to me – I follow one side only. I would though like us to be doing much better in Europe. ANd we could and should be. We have the finance. It is a real shame that someone in such a position can be so thin skinned enough to threaten an opinion piece. A better route would be to engage about it. Fergus McC several times explained what was going on money wise. Why not the current board? I work for a large company and that’s how we would work – you engage with your audience/workers/season ticket payers. I find it…disappointing.

I didn’t read the article as I have recently excluded myself from reading Forrest’s overlong output after he stated in a reply to one of his readers that he could debate with anyone on any issue.
When l challenged him on this assertion because he had earlier refused to publish an anti board post I had written because he had actually done a 180° turn and backed them up and I had the cheek to call him out on it he made false accusations against me and what I had written but wouldn’t publish it for everyone else to decide.
He did not afford me the right of reply,choosing instead to insult me.
The guy is a gutless,coward and a fraud,as evidenced by the fact that he has withdrawn his offending article from yesterday to keep his miserable skin intact.
Any challenge to him is not debated,it’s silenced…..Just like he was yesterday but the only difference was he chose to take his post out of the firing line.

I agree entirely, Eric, with your descriptive breakdown of the Celtic support factions. Their stamp of identity is clear to see. Divided opinions will always exist, and it is because of this that the Celtic Board can freely choose which line of approach suits them best. No matter how many attempts are made to unify opinion, especially of late, it’s not going to happen. Nonetheless, the faction 3 element, of which I am one, will persist come what may. I have no doubt F3 and its driving force will make changes for the better, despite threats by the frightened few or faction 4 if they are entitled to be included.
