Celtic’s Toxic Closeness to the Scottish Media Must End

Celtic’s relationship with sections of the Scottish media has become far too comfortable, and the supporters are entitled to question who it truly benefits.

Selected journalists receive access, invitations and private briefings. Meanwhile, independent Celtic fan media remains outside the door, despite representing the people who actually care about the club.

CELTIC SUPPORTERS CARE — THE PRESS DOES NOT

Celtic supporters live and breathe the club. They buy season tickets, merchandise and European packages. They travel across Scotland and beyond. When the club comes under attack, the fans defend it because Celtic genuinely matters to them.

Most newspapers and broadcasters have no such loyalty. Celtic is content to them. Controversy creates clicks, arguments sell papers and damaging headlines generate attention.

Yet the board continues to treat these outlets like trusted partners.

When the Scottish press pushes false narratives, attacks Celtic’s achievements or repeats claims that damage the club, the board often says nothing. However, when Celtic wants a convenient message circulated, friendly journalists suddenly appear well informed.

THE WRONG PEOPLE RECEIVE ACCESS

That relationship looks increasingly toxic. Traditional reporters receive access because they rarely threaten the board’s position. Fan media faces exclusion because it asks direct questions and holds directors accountable.

The people who love Celtic are kept outside. The people who profit from Celtic receive invitations.

That is completely backwards.

Celtic should engage with responsible fan media and stop treating the established press as trusted friends. Journalists will always protect their employers, careers and access first.

The supporters protect Celtic.

The board should remember who stands by the club when the headlines turn poisonous — because it is never their friends in the Scottish press.
