Yesterday, talkSPORT ran a big interview with Ally McCoist about Manchester City, and the word “liquidation” never appeared in it once.
Not once.
The piece tells you the Ibrox club was “relegated to the Scottish Third Division”.
It tells you they were “demoted due to entering administration”.
It has McCoist reminiscing fondly about the away days at Peterhead, Elgin and Montrose, and calling the whole thing a “bizarre/brilliant experience”.
What it never quite gets round to telling you is that the club he is talking about is dead.
Here is how talkSPORT put it. Read it slowly, because every word of it is doing a job:
Gers were demoted due to entering administration. The 30 members of the Scottish Football League clubs voted 25 to five in favour of Rangers having to start at the bottom of the Scottish football pyramid.
Demoted.
Voted down to the bottom of the pyramid, like a side that had finished bottom of the league.
How exactly can a football club be relegated when that same football club was liquidated?
Only you cannot demote a company that no longer exists.
The old club went into liquidation, and a new company bought up the assets and applied for entry to the league.
That is not a relegation, that is a funeral followed by a job application.
So which part of that process do we think the word “demoted” is covering?
And every single time this story reaches the mainstream, the same little white lie gets typed out all over again.
Relegated.
Never liquidated.
The reason the Ibrox support are raging this week is that the mainstream has dragged their little white lie back into the daylight
We went through all of this in depth last night on the Trinity Tims podcast.
Because Manchester City have now been found guilty of the overwhelming majority of the charges against them.
And the moment that verdict landed, every paper and every radio station in Britain reached for the same comparison.
Rangers 1872.
The benchmark, apparently.
The benchmark for what, exactly?
So the Ibrox side are back in the national conversation for the one reason they never wanted to be in it.
Not for a cup run, not for a European night.
For being the last British club that cheated on an industrial scale and got taken apart for it.
You can understand why they are not enjoying it.
Manchester City will be stripped of titles, and that is the part the Ibrox support genuinely cannot cope with
Because there is one enormous difference between what is coming for City and what happened here in 2012.
The English FA are not going to chicken out.
Liverpool and Manchester United are not going to sit quietly while a club keeps trophies it won by breaking the rules.
talkSPORT reckon the compensation claims from other clubs will start at around £2billion.
Gabby Agbonlahor was on the same station demanding points deductions season after season until City are in League Two.
Simon Jordan wants the club taken off its owners altogether.
That is what a football association looks like when it is genuinely angry.
Now compare it with what the SFA did in 2012.
They let the trophies stay in the building.
They let a brand new company inherit the history of a dead one.
And they let the rest of Scottish football carry the cost of that decision for fourteen years.
Can you imagine the English FA looking at that and thinking there was a lesson in it?
I suspect the Ibrox support are quietly hoping the City case gets so big that it swallows them whole.
That their own sorry end gets downgraded to a footnote in somebody else’s scandal.
It will do the exact opposite.
Every sanction handed to City will read like a list of the things the SFA could not bring themselves to do.
Every stripped title will be a reminder of the ones we never got back.
Make no mistake, City are going to be THE benchmark.
And Rangers 1872 are going to look like the club that got away with it.
This is why the attack on Celtic has been off the scale again this week
I wrote yesterday about the state of it.
The wall to wall posting about the Celtic Boys Club, the pile on, the language that goes with it.
It arrives at exactly the same moment every time.
Any time the EBT era gets raised in public, the deflection button gets pressed.
And it is never, ever about the victims.
Not one of those accounts has ever lifted a finger for a single survivor of what went on in the 1970’s.
It is a points scoring exercise designed to demean Celtic, and that is all it has ever been.
When was the last time you saw one of them raise it on a week they had nothing to deflect from?
They have convinced themselves that this scandal will finish our club off one day.
That we will fall apart at the seams, and they will finally get to watch somebody else’s 2012.
They will be waiting a long time.
Because whatever you think of Dermot Desmond and this board – and you know fine well what I think of them – Celtic are not going into liquidation.
Celtic have never needed a new company to keep the lights on.
Their club was involved in the biggest sporting and cheating scandal in the history of the game in this country.
No amount of noise about Celtic is ever going to change that.
No amount of “relegated” in a talkSPORT article is going to change it either.
They were liquidated, not relegated.
And we will keep saying it every single time you try to slip the wrong word past us…
Key Takeaways
- talkSPORT’s interview with Ally McCoist omitted the term ‘liquidation’ when discussing Rangers’ history.
- The article suggests Rangers did not get demoted but rather liquidated, followed by a new company buying the assets.
- Comparisons draw attention to Manchester City’s situation, which many believe highlights how Rangers escaped severe punishment in 2012.
- The article criticizes the SFA for allowing Rangers to keep titles despite their financial misconduct, contrasting with the English FA’s expected actions against City.
- The discourse around Celtic is viewed as a deflection tactic from the Ibrox support regarding their club’s history of liquidation, not relegation.
