After more than 17 months of rehabilitation, setbacks and waiting, Celtic supporters finally have some genuinely wonderful news about Jota.
The Portuguese winger is set to pull on his boots and play in a match again today as Celtic face Falkirk in a specially arranged behind-closed-doors bounce game at Lennoxtown.
It may not be a competitive fixture and there will be no supporters in the stands, but for Jota this could be one of the most important appearances of his Celtic career.
524 days since that awful afternoon
Jota has not played since 26 April 2025, when he suffered a serious ACL injury during Celtic’s 5-0 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice.
That means 524 days have passed between that devastating afternoon and today’s scheduled return to match action.
The road back has been long. Jota spent significant time rehabilitating in Lisbon before returning to Lennoxtown and gradually progressing through the different stages of his recovery.
Individual work became first-team training. Training progressed into small-sided games.
Now comes the biggest test yet: playing against Premiership opposition.
Martin O’Neill receives a massive Celtic boost
There is another encouraging aspect to today’s game.
Martin O’Neill recently revealed that Jota’s progress was going better than he had initially anticipated.
The Celtic manager had previously spoken about Halloween as a possible landmark in Jota’s recovery, but his subsequent progress has clearly been encouraging.
O’Neill said Jota had been doing “really well” in small-sided matches and even suggested the winger could be ready more quickly than he originally thought.
Today’s game against Falkirk should provide Celtic’s medical and coaching staff with their best indication yet of exactly where Jota stands.
Nobody should expect him to immediately play 90 minutes of competitive football. After such a lengthy absence, patience remains essential.
But this is a huge step.
Celtic supporters can finally start believing
For months, every Jota update has been about rehabilitation, training programmes and projected return dates.
Today is different.
Today, Jota is scheduled to play football again.
If he comes through the Falkirk game comfortably and suffers no adverse reaction, the conversation can begin to move away from months and towards weeks.
And what a sight it will eventually be when the Superstar from Portugal walks back onto the pitch in front of the Celtic support.
Jota has endured an incredibly difficult journey to reach this point.
Today at Lennoxtown represents another major step towards completing it.
Welcome back, Jota. We have missed you.
