Big Names

We tend not to attract any big name players to the club, the last “big name” signing would probably be Craig Gordon and he’s hardly an A-lister. Any familiar names tend to be from Premier League out-of-favour castaways who get exiled out to Glasgow. I can see how this appears to be some casual fan nonsense as what matters is the players’ performance on the pitch, however, getting recognisable players is a great way to increase the global exposure of the club, in turn gaining more fans across the world. Smaller Premier League clubs seem to be attracting some big-name players; Ayew going to Swansea, and Shaqiri and Afellay going to Stoke spring to mind. Maybe it’s the city? Glasgow isn’t very glamorous with weather to match, but I live near Stoke-On-Trent and I’d hardly describe it as a sprawling metropolis. It’s been quite a while since I was genuinely excited to see a player come to Celtic, a proven product with a great reputation. Part of the reason may be due to the next paragraph.
Finances

Ok so Celtic have never really spent big, we should all be used to it by now, we will rarely spend over £3 million on one player and that leaves it really hard to compete with rival bids. We are a huge club, with lots of support, but the finances don’t match. We outright refuse to change our wage structure to attract a higher calibre of player, I can appreciate and understand the sentiment, we don’t want to spend £90,000 a week on one player as all the other players will start wanting better contracts. When you look at the way football is going, the wages are going up, we won’t be an attractive club to a young prospect when they can get a better deal somewhere else. I read Roy Keane’s latest autobiography and he highlighted that when he was moving to Celtic, the board didn’t feel the need to offer him big money as they felt he should want to play for Celtic for free! Well I’m sorry but that’s just not how it works anymore, players want big wages and if we don’t change our model, we could end up falling at the wayside.
Football Hooligan

This will be a touchy subject for a few people but it needs talking about, every set of fans has their bunch of idiots that give the club a bad name, Chelsea had their racist train escapades, and Madrid have their “fans” trying to confront Gareth Bale. The sectarian songs and chants don’t bother me too much, as long as the club doesn’t face any repercussions from it, as it’s linked with Celtic and Rangers, I doubt many fans get too offended by them these days. It’s when this spills off into skirmishes and assaults. Paradise should be a place to bring the family along to see a game, with a great atmosphere and everyone enjoying themselves. It occasionally happens when some supporters travel abroad for a European game and decide to throw bottles and attack other supporters. It’s just stupid and gives the club a bad image, and I’m glad it isn’t as much of a problem as it once was. Every knows the type of supporter this is, beer in hand with a beer belly to match yet has to take his top off and armed with plenty of racist and homophobic ideologies.
