Celtic coasted into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable win over Championship strugglers Brechin City.
It took less than two minutes for Celtic to score their opening goal of 2018 as James Forrest turned home Scott Sinclair’s cutback pass.
The Englishman breezed passed his man down the left flank, rolling the ball into the path of Forrest who cooly redirected the ball towards goal and beyond ‘keeper Graeme Smith for his 13th goal of the season.
Nine minutes later Sinclair found himself in the right place at the right time to fire the ball into the net after Callum McGregor intercepted a slack pass on the edge of the box.
Olivier Ntcham and Dedryck Boyata both rose highest inside the box to add to the Hoops’ goal tally with a seven minute spell.
Odsonne Edouard added a fifth goal with five minutes remaining, which was also his fifth goal of the season for Celtic.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are in action again on Tuesday when they make the short four-mile trip to face Partick Thistle at Firhill.
Here are the player ratings for today’s game.
Craig Gordon 6/10
Not troubled in the game and had little to do.
Mikael Lustig 5.5/10
Poor start to the game giving away possession and needless fouls. Overlapped Forrest and fed Ntcham for the third goal of the game.
Dedryck Boyata 6.5/10
Rarely troubled or involved defensively. Rose highest to turn home McGregor’s corner to make it 4-0.
Kristoffer Ajer 6.5/10
Confident striding forward with the ball and can pick a pass. Beaten too easily by Layne on the left flank and almost proved costly.
Kieran Tierney 6.5/10
Got forward at will down the left flank as Brechin sat back an invited pressure onto them.
Scott Brown 6.5/10
In control in midfield and kept linked the play from defence to attack.
Olivier Ntcham 7/10
Solid start to the game passing and moving quickly. Almost scored after a quick one-two with McGregor. Rose well to head home the third goal of the game after starting the attack in midfield.
Callum McGregor 7/10
Good driving run down the left flank and picked out Ntcham on the edge of the box. Pressed the ball well and won possession for Sinclair to score. Assisted Boyata for the fourth goal with a good delivery from a corner.
James Forrest 6.5/10
Put Celtic ahead inside two minutes. Roamed freely in the final third causing problems for the Brechin defence.
Scott Sinclair 6.5/10
Good run down the byline and cut back to Forrest for the opening goal. Rolled the ball into the back of the net to double Celtic’s lead.
Odsonne Edouard 6.5/10
Movement along the frontline wasn’t matched by the quality of passing to give the youngster a chance to get a shot on goal. Worked hard and linked up play well in the build up to the third goal. Got his reward scoring the fifth goal late on.
Nir Bitton 5.5/10
Came on for Boyata with 29 minutes to play in the game. Shaky moment at the back post which was the best chance to score in the game for Brechin.
Eboue Kouassi 6/10
Replaced Brown with just under 30 minutes left in the game.
Michael Johnston N/A
Substituted on for Sinclair with 22 minutes left to play in the game. Didn’t see much of the ball.
