Celtic released an almost 10 minute video on the club’s YouTube channel on Tuesday, looking back at the hugely successful season 2021/22 campaign, which saw the Bhoys regain the Premiership title and win the Premier Sports Cup.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the video is the footage from the Celtic dressing room before the Premier Sports Cup Final against Hibernian.

In that footage, we saw Hoops captain Callum McGregor speak to the rest of his teammates before the game, and this is what he said:

“You believe in each other even more, you trust each other even more. Guarantee we’ve got enough ability, enough heart, enough desire in this room. We’ve got winners in this room to just keep going, we go and show everybody that never gave us a chance at the start of the season.”

McGregor’s comments had an effect on the team, as the Hoops went on to win the cup thanks to two Kyogo goals.

You don’t often get to see behind the scenes in the Celtic dressing room, which makes that particular segment of the video so interesting. McGregor’s comments are also very interesting.

The comments show a lot of leadership that is needed to be a captain of a team like Celtic, especially when you are taking over from someone like Scott Brown, who will go down in history as one of Celtic’s best ever captains.

It was intriguing to head McGregor talk about the people that didn’t give the Hoops a chance at the start of the season, that might well have been motivation for the team, to prove the doubters wrong, and Celtic have certainly done that.

McGregor seems to take the role of captaincy very seriously, and it is obviously more than just a figurehead role that it is at other clubs. At Celtic it means more than that, and you can see how happy McGregor was to lift the Premiership trophy when the Hoops won the title.

The challenges will re-start next season, as the Bhoys aim to make inroads in the Champions League and retain the title, and that will be another challenge for McGregor, but it is one that he should relish.
