The case for Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson…..there is no case, it’s that simple

For over 20 years, Peter Lawwell was one of the most divisive figures in the Celtic boardroom, now that he is gone, he certainly isn’t missed.

In time, he will not be remembered for anything good that he did, rather, he’ll be remembered for being heavily involved in ushering in the period of crisis we now find ourselves in.

Lawwell sowed the seeds for all of this.

That cannot be disputed.

But under him, it was managed decline.

In reality, all we can really say is that Lawwell’s biggest achievement was avoiding liquidation.

Which wasn’t really an achievement at all.

Because we were never in danger of being liquidated, at any point.

Managed decline fared alright during the Lawwell era because luck was on our side.

We had no real challenge in the Scottish Premiership, and our deficiencies under the surface were masked over by competent managers.

So how was Lawwell heavily involved in bringing Celtic to where it finds itself now?

Well, Michael Nicholson was Lawwell’s placeman.

The only reason that Nicholson is the CEO of Celtic is because of Peter Lawwell.

No other football club in Britain would appoint someone like Nicholson as their CEO.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.

As I stated earlier, under Peter Lawwell we experienced managed decline.

But under Nicholson, who demonstrates a total inability to run a football club, it has now become unmanaged decline.

At this moment in time, under his non-existent leadership, Celtic is in a death spiral.

This death spiral will continue as long as this man is CEO at Glasgow Celtic.

The majority of the fanbase will not accept Nicholson as the man to lead this club.

They will never accept him because he has done far too much damage during his time as CEO.

This damage will only continue while he is in office.

Celtic fans will continue to withdraw their financial support of the club while incompetent individuals are allowed free reign.

This withdrawal will become more and more crippling the longer Nicholson and his cronies remain at the club.

The next step is the boycotting of a home fixture.

If that does not achieved the desired result, season ticket sales will become the next thing to be impacted.

There is no doubt that this will hurt the club.

But if that’s what it takes to remove people like Nicholson, who hurt the club by their very presence each day they are there, then so be it.

Even if ten thousand fans decided they did not want to renew their season tickets, the financial impact of that is about £5,500,000.

That is a substantial amount.

People will argue that for every person who gives up their season ticket, another will be waiting in line to snap it up.

The Celtic board are banking on that.

They believe they can brazen this out.

Try to think, though, what impact the following scenario might have on season ticket renewals and uptake.

Firstly, Nicholson fails to land any more additions of note to the first team in this transfer window.

This then puts the footballing operation in a position where it is virtually impossible to win the League.

We concede our League title to either Hearts or the Ibrox side.

Despite the fact Martin O’Neill tried gamely to compete and win the League.

Fans are fully in the knowledge that the reason for this was down to little or no recruitment in this current transfer window.

With £77 million sitting in the bank.

And I might add, not a single penny of that cash has been spent in this transfer window to date.

How does Nicholson imagine he survives that scenario?

His continued presence at Celtic causes detrimental damage to our club.

It continues a backward slide, and ensures there is no progression as a club under his stewardship.

I titled this article the case for Michael Nicholson.

There is no case for him.

There is only the case for getting him out of the club.

Driven by the spite of a bitter billionaire and his fool of a son.

That very same spite has driven them on to keep the likes of serial failures like Nicholson, McKay and Wilson in the boardroom.

All of those supposed custodians who stood idly by must be made to remember the damage they inflicted on Celtic.

The support will not forgive them for their silence.
