After a very topsy turvy 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign that saw three different managers with the legend that was Martin O’Neill returning twice and saving the Celtic Board’s blushes on both occasions, whilst it seemed incredibly unlikely that he could even truly entertain the idea of a permanent Parkhead return – earlier this week the serial winning 74 year old has now signed on for the 2026/27 campaign.
After his long spell away from the club, his nigh on 20 years later return saw him lift both the Premiership title (final day of the campaign to add to the drama) and the Scottish Cup and quite simply, it was a remarkable return given where we were at points during the year as success of any kind was certainly not on the cards for large periods of the season.
Hoops fans are now understandably wondering what comes next and will be eagerly watching Celtic live scores next term to see if O’Neill can bring more success to Celtic Park. He will also be rebuilding the foundations that we again so clearly lack, and absolutely key to either of those things happening are whether the Board back him properly or continue to think they understand the ‘beautiful game’ better than people who have tasted real success whilst playing it as professionals, and what kind of business we again do during the summer transfer window.
With the distraction of the World Cup beginning this week, keeping fans occupied when they are not checking on how the National team are progressing, is the speculation rumour mill as it is already full of reports of players that we are claimed to have an interest in.
Whilst all expect and accept that 99% of these links will be total bunkum, now O’Neill is in position hopefully more sensible links will appear and we could well have one in the shape of 22 goal French striker, Elias Filet.
The 24 year old came through Sochaux’s youth ranks and has just had a very impressive season out in Switzerland with FC Aarau, scoring 22 times in 49 league matches whilst making the adjustment to the country in his debut year with them. Whilst having impressive periods through his career so far, he has been somewhat of a journey man having spent time in Luxembourg and Croatia as well, so Celtic could very much provide him with a home and O’Neill would be the perfect man to pull him to his true consistent potential.
Sky Sports Switzerland are claiming that Celtic held a video conference with the player’s agent this week to sound out the chances of getting a potential deal over the line, and it is likely that his current club may look to cash in given how high his stock is right now given he was named the league’s Player of the Season award winner after helping fire Aarau into second place. Given their two legged Play Off set up, they ultimately lost out to far better known side Grasshoppers.
Obviously, whilst it is very early days for O’Neill right now, he has made no secret at all of the fact that he feels we lack both physicality and firepower at the top of the pitch, so this could be that box ticked.
