Celtic send officials to Austria to seal £4m Tommy Smith deal

Celtic have sent club officials to Huddersfield Town’s pre-season tour of Austria to secure a deal for Tommy Smith, according to Stoke on Trent Live.

The report suggests that the Hoops are the front runners to sign the right-back in a deal worth £4 million, whereas Stoke City, who were also interested, had a £2.5 million for the 27-year-old turned down.

Smith has been a long-term target for Neil Lennon, who is desperate to add to his right-back options following the departure of Swede Mikael Lustig.

The Englishman has been a regular for the Terriers in recent years and played a key role in helping the club to the Premier League back in 2017.

The former Manchester City youngster has made close to 200 appearances for Huddersfield and looks likely to be the Hoops’ fourth summer signing.

Lennon, who will lead his side against Bosnian outfit FK Sarajevo in a first-round Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, has already added Christopher Jullien, Luca Connell and Boli Mbombo to his side, and it appears as if Smith could be the next through the door at Celtic Park.
