Peter Lawwell has been receiving wonderful praise from the European Football Clubs organisation as the former Celtic Chairman stepped down from his role in that body yesterday.
Lawwell held the position of Head of Sub Division 2 of the European Football Clubs from 2014 to 2026.
During that time, he has never presided over a Celtic that progressed beyond the knockout stages of any European competition.
Prior to that, Celtic did not progress beyond the knockout stages in European competition since 2004.
Celtic were knocked out of the last 8 that season by Villreal.
That was to be our last foray beyond that point in European football.
Yes indeed, a remarkable achievement from Peter Lawwell, considering how clubs much smaller than us, and with much less resources, have performed in Europe since then.
Remarkable how he managed to downsize Celtic to the level he did up until December 2025.

Today, we see the real legacy of Peter Lawwell’s tenure at Celtic.
We see people who were hired to enact his policies, who now seem inept when it comes to running the club without his guidance.
Lawwell thought he was the master of the art of the transfer.
We know better.
Whatever he taught Michael Nicholson has resulted in us now seeing the worst Celtic squad in living memory.
Asset stripped of any value, and filled with useless loanees.
As for European football?
Well, the joke is on us when it comes to that.
Qairat Almaty was the icing on the cake of our European non-achievements since the heady days of 2003.
Yet Lawwell is still receiving praise for his “remarkable achievements at Celtic over the years”.
Here is the tribute the EFC paid to him:
EFC congratulates Peter Lawwell for his remarkable achievements over many years at Celtic FC and thanks him for his long-held commitment to European club football as EFC Vice-Chair, EFC Executive Committee Member and Board Member since 2014.
Peter leads EFC’s Finance Working Group and has previously served on UEFA’s Club Competitions Committee. He also sits on the Board of Administration of UC3, the EFC-UEFA joint venture which manages the commercialisation of the UEFA club competitions, and has played a key leadership role at European level in ensuring all European clubs and their interests are at the heart of the game.
EFC will now be working with Peter to organise a smooth transition of his EFC roles and responsibilities. We will continue to represent and support Celtic FC, along with our 800+ other EFC members, to ensure clubs and their interests are central to the ongoing development of European and global club football.
We wish Peter and his family all the very best for what comes next.
A glowing tribute indeed.
His “long held commitment to European football” for the club he was CEO and Chairman of was outstanding.
So outstanding, that Celtic may be facing the qualifying stages of Europe’s third tier competition by the time this season concludes.
What an achievement.
Many clubs couldn’t do that if they tried had they access to the kind of finance Celtic has had.
If Lawwell played a key leadership role at European level “ensuring all European clubs and their interests are at the heart of the game”, he certainly didn’t show that leadership and commitment to the club he supposedly bled for.
Celtic now teeters on the brink of European anonimity.

If Martin O’Neill does not manage to land the title this season, we run the risk of spending the next few years in the wilderness of European football.
His legacy at Celtic when it comes to Europe is nothing short of a digrace.
Despite this glowing tribute from the EFC, Lawwell certainly won’t be revered at Celtic for his European acheivments.
He will be despised.
Just as the rest of his useless board colleagues will be once they have vacated Celtic Park.
Not one of them deserves a modicum of praise when you take into consideration the condition Celtic is in.
Lawwell’s legacy is the carnage you see today.
These are the ” remarkable achievements” the EFC are showering praise on him for.
Let Lawwell bask in that glory.
The same as Trump basks in the glory of winning the war against Iran.
He and the orange twat are one and the same.

Fairs fair , he did achieve corporate greed as the norm and made himself a very rich man at the fans and clubs expense , stop giving them your money
An excellent article, Eric. When Celtic historians of the future come to discuss the legacy of this fella, he will be remembered as:
1 A coward. If he had done his job correctly, in 2017, once the Supreme Court decision had come down, ruling the Huns’ use of EBTs illegal, he should have dragged David Murray & Co through the courts, to ensure justice for Celtic, and every other club, cheated out of cups and titles by the Huns.
2 A cheat. He should have vigorously fought the 5WA to ensure that no new Ibrox club would arise. Instead, as always, he put love of money over principle, in order to please his Ibrox masters.
3 A liar. When questioned about the 5WA at an AGM, he lied to shareholders…a sackable offence.
Yes indeed, Brother Lawwell will be consigned to the dustbin of history…along with a certain other fella who signed for Der Hun in July 1989.
Hail Hail.
The two worst men in the history of Glasgow Celtic FC. Lawwell. The greedy pocket filling Capitalist who almost all on his own cost us the ten in a row.
Then you have the Moustache who is hardly ever even near celtic Park, and only uses us as a plaything.
