Celtic’s Transfer Failure Should See Heads Roll in the Boardroom

Celtic’s transfer failure is becoming harder to defend with every passing day. It has now been 62 days since Celtic lifted the Scottish Cup, while the summer transfer window has been open for 39 days. Yet, despite having one of the healthiest bank balances in British football, the club has effectively added only one new first-team signing.

THE CLOCK HAS BEEN TICKING FOR TWO MONTHS

That timeline should alarm every Celtic supporter. This is not a club rebuilding from financial hardship. This is a club that has enjoyed record income, Champions League money and huge transfer profits.

Supporters were promised ambition. Instead, they have watched negotiations drag on for weeks. Kasper Høgh and Mika Baur remain unresolved despite months of discussion. Every passing day raises the same question. Why does everything take so long at Celtic?

The board’s favourite currency appears to be patience. Unfortunately, patience does not win football matches. Preparation does.

THE REST OF THE LEAGUE HAS SHOWN HOW IT IS DONE

The comparison with the rest of the Premiership is embarrassing.

Aberdeen have completed 11 signings. Dundee United have brought in nine. Hearts have secured eight, with another close. Rangers have completed seven. St Johnstone have signed eight. Hibernian and Dundee have both added five.

Even clubs operating with a fraction of Celtic’s resources have managed to identify targets, negotiate deals and strengthen their squads.

Celtic, meanwhile, continue to negotiate and negotiate again. For a club with such financial muscle, that simply should not happen.

DESMOND AND NICHOLSON MUST ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

Responsibility ultimately sits at the top.

Dermot Desmond sets the direction of the football club. Michael Nicholson oversees the executive operation. Supporters have every right to ask why the recruitment process appears so painfully slow year after year.

This is no longer an isolated transfer window. It has become a recurring pattern. Negotiations become public sagas, deadlines slip and key targets drift elsewhere while Celtic weigh up every detail.

No supporter expects reckless spending. Fans simply expect competence. They expect a club with Celtic’s financial power to move decisively when the manager identifies his targets.

The new season is almost here. The excuses are running out. Other clubs have proved deals can be completed quickly. Celtic have once again proved they can turn straightforward business into an exhausting marathon.

For a club of this size, with these resources and these ambitions, that is simply not good enough.
